Burgundy and blue bruising psilocybe
    #6187992 -

Hey folks,

These images are from a species found at a creek bed in the southeast. I believe that they are Psilocybe Caerulipes or closely related. I'm not looking for ID help, although comments or questions are welcome, the primary reason for this post is the odd burgundy bruising that is present in conjunction with the typical blue bruising. Sorry for the poor photos my camera is getting a bit long in the tooth.

Here is a close up of the stipe from the more mature individual shown above gills up:

I'll wear my ignorance proudly and ask : Any chance of the burgundy bruising indicating oxidizing DMT?

Is this a common feature, I couldn't find any mention of this phenomenon in a search. Any ideas?

Those do not look like P. caeulipes to me.

What state did you fond them in?

Those certainly look a lot like Psilocybe weilii...

Are you in Georgia?

because of skepticism...?

i bet he/she doesn't beleive weilii was brought here by an extra-terrestrial hurricane either :P

Weilii doesn't have the very pronounced nipple that these do. At first, I DID think they were weilii and figured that the classic habitats of weilii were bound to be fleshed out to a greater degree but the habitat of these (right out of the walls of a creek bed) fits better with caerulipes. The area these were found in featured none of the oft quoted characteristics of weilii (pines, sweetgum, bermuda). I've seen many, many weilii and these are VERY different.

Either way, I tend to think that mycological "species" require more fluid boundaries than more recently evolved forms of life. So, basically, what I'm saying is that what we agree to call it really isn't the point of my post.

The purpose of my post was to ask about burgundy bruising in this and other psilocybe's as well as how common it is and what causes it.

It wasn't my idea to put the post under the hunting forum and I really don't need an ID unless it brings the burgundy bruising to light.

Many mushrooms with white stalks will turn brown after handling. It might be a chemical reaction, but most likely just the fact that the white tissue is compressed and creates a darker color.

What Im saying is that most mushrooms bruise a hint brown, and its not uncommon.

I have seen pronounced nipples on Weilii before as well. Do a search on google.

Angry, I've collected thousands of Weilii since spring of 2000 and am very familiar with its highly variant morphology. I looked around for the images you spoke of but nothing came up with points like these. None in the image page for weilii season 2006 thread either. One of LK's posts mentioned some he found with similarity with Ps. hoogshagenii but I couldn't view the image.

As for compression or oxidation, this is clearly a chemical reaction. The picture is poor and for that I apologize, you can't see the depth of color that shows in person. I've handled lots of wild mushrooms so I've seen how the flesh of different mushrooms can darken in a variety of ways.

Either way, what I know so far amounts to this:

1. These mushrooms are growing in an area unusual for weilii but typical for caerulipes (but I'm not saying that's what they are)

2. These don't have a clear annulus like caerulipes
3. The shape of the cap of these mushrooms is pointed in a much more dramatic fashion than any weilii I've seen in images or in person.
4. They have a purple tan/brown sporeprint that is clearly lighter in color than typical for weilii.
5. I originally assumed that they were weilii but subtle diffences when dry kept me wondering.
6. These exhibit a bruising that is far closer to red than brown that is distinct from what I've seen on weilii or any other psilocybe (*But LK's avatar has a mushroom in it that seems to be doing the same thing- I can't say for sure from just the little picture). They also bruise the typical blue greenish color.

Are you are 100% sure about the blue bruising?

Some species of Psilocybe, such as caerulipes print more of a chocolate brown than purple brown. I do agree with Dan that they don't like like blue foots though.
I'd be interested if the print is a very dark purple brown, a chocolate brown, or a regular purple brown - if they indeed are Psilocybes.

They are weilii I guarantee it, I have had plenty of weilii over the years that exude the maroonish tint before and during drying. I also have had weilii with that convex nipple as well for example

The redish purple color on the cap is not from spore deposit.

couldnt find better pic of the nippled caps but you get the idea from this picture that they do get that sharp tip with weilii too.

this last picture is just to show that weilii also like slopes and sides of hills.

I too have had plenty of maroonish weilii. Although I always assumed that the color on the cap was from spore deposit of overlapping mushrooms. Nice pics though phish, that nipple is quite
pronounced on your second pic.

Here are some maroon weilii I found a few weeks ago:

the color in your photo looks verry clearly like spore deposite.

on another note, i've collected P. cyanofibrilosa and P. semilanceata which exhibited darker than the usual dull brown bruising/aging reaction, though this was an orrange-red and always in the stipe
base.

This is true... the burgundy colour in Xmush's pic seems to be relegated to the cap. However, the bruising seen in weiliiskeptics pics are on the stipe, and obvious bruising as opposed to spores....
Though I don't think it really changes anything. Phishhead's pics look dead on.

Let me be clear, I originally posted in Advanced mycology. The only point of the post was to raise attention and hopefully get some information about the burgundy bruising. I don't have a
problem calling it weilii, really, the post didn't belong in the thread but since I posted pictures, MushroomDan just had to move it over here.

So, ignore the picture of the damned mushroom, I know it's a psilocybe, I know it's blueing just like other psilos, I also know that there is burgundy oxidative bruising and I don't know anything
about it.

I know that MANY DMT containing plants are often deep red in the relevent area. I know that psilocine/psilocybine is very close to DMT. I know that the bugundy bruising is a big minority of the
psilos
I've come in contact with.

I have no idea what it is, any experts out there? Considering that these mushrooms have created a huge buzz on the shroomery yet I couldn't find a single post on the burgundy bruising leads me to
believe I'm barking up the wrong tree.

If anyone knows an expert, pass on the question. I think it's an interesting effect worthy of looking into.

Hey Phish, do you guaruntee it based on microscopic observation of the spores of that mushroom or just on the fact that it was found with other mushrooms with classic weilii attributes? Otherwise
it's just as likely that that your pictured specimen is a different variety. I seem to remember hearing that Guzman thought there could be an additional 2 species (psilo) included in the original
batch of weilii vouchers collected in roswell. I'm really only trying to temper the finality of your determination for what it is or isn't.

Once again, the short answer is the burgundy/brown bruising is nothing uncommon.

If your asking if its caused by chemical reactions with other tryptamines in the mushroom, no, thats not whats causing it.

Many light colored mushroom tissue that has been bruised/handled will turn a brownish color.

Besides that, I dont know what else you are looking for. I dont think there is anything special about the bruising found... If there is anyone who knows otherwise, hopefully he/she will post.

You have made it clear that you are unhappy about me moving this thread. If you want me to move it back to advanced mycology now that we have some opinion about ID and the bruising reaction from folks who hunt in your area, I will be happy to do so.

However, your attitude is a little annoying. I moved your post here because I thought you would get better answers to your questions in this forum.

You have seven posts. Having been around these parts a little longer, I just might have a better idea where questions can best be answered, maybe not. But please know that the shroomery staff are trying to help you.

In any event, things will work out better for you if you are nice to folks when you are new in a community. That's wisdom for anywhere you go, not just the shroomery.

Some more wisdom for you:

There are no experts; there are only those who know a little more than others.

LizardKing found an unidentified species of Psilocybe in Georgia a few years ago. I have not seen him for a very long time, but Gumby knows how to contact him. Maybe if you are nice to Gumby he can point you in the right direction.
