You'll never have 100% pure verm.
Most probably algae grow on the pure verm (high humidity). Algae don't need a carbon source (what you called nutrients) because they make photosynthesis. Then probably a fungus grows parasiticaly on the algae (who produce sugars).
This is just a theory
I mean, fungi can even grow in destilled water, and that's what I call nutrient free
