When growing sclerotia, SHAKE!

I had mentioned in a previous post how some of my jars had the majority of truffels growing above the substrate. I wanted to provide a picture to illustrate the point.

The substrate is rye grass seed, hydrated in diluted coffee. Once they come out of the PC, give them a good shake. I didn't anticipate it working like this, and I haven't started any jars lately, so I haven't had the opportunity to examine the jars closely after the shake. I don't believe it's necessary to have the glass covered with seed, the shake will deposit starch onto the glass which gives the mycelium a substrate to climb. It's not even a lot of starch, won't be very noticable to the eye, though there should be something visible when looking closely.

Anyway, the pics aren't as good as in person, but you get the idea. Most of these truffels will require no cleanup at all. I expect to get about 45 dry grams from these 3 jars.



Edit: And here is the harvest from 1 jar. It took about 2 :laugh: minutes! The truffel beside the lighter is the only one that needs to have grass seed brushed away. The fluff you see in the bowl is mycelium network that connected the truffels together.

I love it when they form a nice, fat rock right on top of the jar. Just reach in and get it, then save the rest of the jar for later. I pulled a 150 gram stone off the top of a quart jar of coffee hydrated rye berries.

Geez, 150 grams is my average per jar. Did you clone that sucker?

Also, is rye berries the same as rye grain? I went to the farm supply and asked for rye berries, and the guy looked at me like I was nuts. They did carry rye grain, and I picked up a bag of that.

They always seem to form better at the top of the jars. Mine seemed to form a seal which I think stops air exchange to the bottom of the jar. I think sclerotia would be better in shallow tupperware containers. Many get lots in the casing layers.

I had no luck with wheat grains. Roger always reports great sclerotia with rye grains, but few others have tried it. Needs far more experiments in this area.

I would be very cautious using rye grain from the feed store. It's prepared for animal feed and usually has fungicides placed in it for increased storage life in damp/wet barns. The same product prepared without fungicides and often grown organically, is available at health food stores and is usually labled 'rye berries'.

Perhaps certain isolated strains of mexicana will fruit mainly against barriers and glass, but my experience is they fruit throughout the entire substrate fairly evenly. You'll see from the picture below, the sclerotia that is fruiting formed right in the center of the petri dish. Quart jars like those shown below, once they've had the product dumped out and the sclerotia separated from the grains, consistantly have 1/2 quart of pure sclerotia. Bear in mind, that is with coffee hydrated rye berries. When I skip the coffee or use grass seed, yields are average.

If you'll use rye berries, drying out is not a problem the way it is with grass seed. I've opened year old jars and they were still ok, and not dried out, but much longer than that and they begin to rot.

:shocked: :shocked: :shocked: err, sucks for me. I inoculated 6 jars -w- reishi 2 days ago. I guess I'll find out if my grain was supplemented.

As far as fruiting against barriers, In the 20 some jars I've harvested so far, the majority of sclerotia were growing against the glass, or above the substrate. Other than some tiny formations, I've probably only pulled 3-4 truffels below sub that weren't growing against glass. Another way to say it is that the sclerotia tends to grow on the outside of the mass. But perhaps that's just the strain my vendor happens to carry.

Blackout, I thought the same thing (tupperware), but had casserole dishes in mind. Lots of glass, and lots of headroom. What I considered was to spawn grain to hpoo with a 1:1 ratio, cover with saran and poke a few tiny holes, cover them with micropore tape. I probably have 10 various sized casserole dishes, presents, passed down, etc. Can't seem to get rid of them.

But it would be silly/redundant for me to keep growing cubes/trufels, I wouldn't know what to do with them.

So it IS ok to use Rye GRAIN/berries for Mexicana A sclerotia formation?

I recently inoculated so rye grain jars with this, but then I was told that the grains are "too big" and so would not be suitable for truffles. Please tell me this isn't ture and that my jars have SOME use.

Awesome. My spore vendor had me really scared they, said I wouldn't really get any worthwhile results!

One other thing, is water content going to affect it very much? I used a 2:1 (Rye grain: water) ratio by volume.

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

I would guess that rye grain truffels would be much easier to clean, as compared to grass seed, because of their size. Truffels below the substrate tend to have a bunch of grass seed sticking out of them. I'd still give the jars a shake at some point before inoculation. I wouldn't use grass seed again though, unless it's all I could get.

I think grass seed cleans easier... but damn, they BOTH clean very easily compared to say, wbs.

If it has rye in its name, you can't go wrong.
