dry substrate?
    #867742 - 09/06/02 07:28 PM (18 years, 5 months ago)

nobdy mixed up some substrate today. and nobody followed the pf recipe to a T...he beleives. howver when fully mixed the substrate was damp but still felt very dry. when squeezed no water dripped out. so nobody wants to know if mycelium will still grow in this dry-ish substrate? the strain in B+.,

It should be damp and not drip water when squeezed.

In reply to:

there were lots of clumps of flour

This may delay colonization time somewhat, but I don't think it will be a huge problem. Let me give you a tip. Mix the verm and BRF first before you add the water. This will disperse the BRF much better than if it were wet.

Well matts, you actually recommend something different.  I've never tried your method, but if it works, it works.  It's just not a good idea trying to mix the flour when it's wet.

hey buddy.

not to worry the verm absorbs a lot of water. thats its job.
i would recmend to make enough for 2-3 jars at a time. this way you dont waste as much, and it keeps it from drying out when it sits too long.

hope this helps ya

I to use to mix the verm and water, then the brf. It makes a good coating on your verm. I use to have a hard time trying to mix up the brf and verm and water all at the same time. I read about that somewhere and it works good. Also every time I followed a pf tek, many of them, I always came out with a lot of substrate left. I just stored it in the fridge in a tupperware bowl for use later.
