Help, need advice right now...

My mom has been on a long drinking binge and is trying to quit. She tried to stop yesterday but had severe shakes. She wants me to take her to the Dr. right now to try to get some Valium. What would you say to get the Doc to get him to prescribe something like Valium or xanax? I mean should she tell them she's coming off a binge or something like she has bad panic attacks or what? I have to make sure she gets the pills, what's the right thing to tell the Doc?

The right thing to tell the doctor is what's wrong. If he thinks valium is what's needed, then that's what he'll give.
Also, trading one drug for another is not a good idea.

replacing alcohol with Valium or any other substance isnt likely to work...she may just end up addicted to the Valium... abusive personalities tend to stay that way...be it alcohol or Valium...she should kick cold turkey and seek council on cravings...im not one to scream that people need AA or NA but it worked for my mom who was a total drunk...shes been sober 15 years.

Yeah I know, she needs it for a couple days to combat the shakes. I would much rather see her take Valium a couple days than drink, she already has mild cirhosis. She has took them before after a binge and only needed them for like 3 days or less.

valium is used for alcohol withdrawls, she wont have to tell the doctor anything but the truth. shes addicted to booze and is having bad withdrawls.. of course she could end up addicted to them too.. but thats why she should only be tapering off with the valium not taking a bunch of them everyday just cause she wants to

Take her to the Doc and tell him the truth, get her some real help, even if it is AA, she'll thank you later for it.

If it was me I'd say "I'm kicking booze and need something for my nerves. Gimmie some Valium."

Yeah that's what I'm gonna have her do. Just tell the truth and see what the Doc can do. I mean she hates the way Valium make her feel so I don't see her getting addicted but ya never know and besides he probably won't give her but a couple of days worth, which will be plenty to combat shakes. She's been to all the meetings over the years and she says all they ever do is talk about drinking so it just makes her want to drink even more.
She quit for 4 years and has just recently fell off the wagon again. She did drink heavily for 7 years and that's how she developed cirhosis. She's really stubborn but I keep on pushing her and it seems to help keep her on track until this latest binge she's been on. I'm just happy she's getting off the booze cause she's already starting to get really sick again and won't go to the hospital. So for now I have to trust she's going to quit with the help of the Valium.

Actually, replacing alcohol with Valium might not only be a good idea, it might be NECESSARY.
Tell the doctor the truth, of course. This should be obvious.
Alcohol withdrawals, (and this is the same with benzos like Valium) have to be done gradually, and you can replace the alcohol with Valium or other benzos to ween her off of it. Unlike opiate withdrawals, there can be life threatening complications if she stops suddenly. Like seizures or strokes. Switching to Valium, and gradually decreasing the dosage is a good way to get her off of the shit without killing her.

Yeah and generally the amount perscribed will be for a short period of time as well, maybe 5 days or even less.
