Subs in woodchip
    #5498859 - 04/10/06 04:30 AM (17 years, 11 months ago)

Hi, im not really knew, this is just a new account, cant remember my old login :/

anyways, im in melb, been reading that subs popup in woodchip, pineneedles, sawdust, mulch, and landscaped gardens... etc

so my question to u guys is... can it be as simple as going to the home and garden store, purchasing items like sawdust, tanbark, pinemulch and the like. and placing them all over my garden in time for the season?
is there a remote possibility i will get subs growing in my garden this way?

thanx guys

There is a non-zero probability.

I wouldnt say it couldnt happen but its a slim chance. My garden was fully mulched around 2 years ago and i got 2, seperate patches last season (2005.) They weren't huge, but it did show that the mulch was enough to support mycelial growth and produce mushrooms.

But yeah, just because there is mulch doesnt automatically mean mushrooms are going to grow.

Haha yeah. If you are in eastern suburbs there are defenitely patches everywhere, dont even bother with the mulching. The lazy way out would be too go hunting, it would take less effort hehe.

shrooms usually appear in bark gardens from the council mulching up bits of tree and shit from local forests where shrooms naturally grow, the spores can then get incorporated in the wood chips and thus grow where it is spread. It's not likely, but it does happen as i know i few places.

i think he is talkign about a different type of mushroom - Pan subbatl not Ps.suaberuginosa which loves wood mulch.
You can do that - buy yourself some new mukch, but your better transplanting older mulch with a few colonised wood chips and then watch the patch grow every year...I miss my old house...

I think this might be some confusion about Pan subbalteatus, or subbs which grow in straw and manure, and Psilocybe subaero...(can't spell right now) which grow in wood chips down under and elsewhere.

I think most people mean Psilocybe subaeruginosa when they say subs.

Usually people write subbs for pan subbs, and subs for psil subaeruginosa. But if you're on the top of the planet, any spelling usually referes to pans, if you're on the bottom, subaeruginosa.

Well were do woodchips come from? ... the cutting up of trees in forests, right? Subs occur in pine and eucalypt forests, as mushrooms drop large quantites of spores they'd get into the batches of woodchips before shipping to the garden/ landscaping store or wherever. The chips are laid, natural or unnatural watering occurs and the spores germinate into mycelium. The mycelium colonizes the substrate and when conditions are favourable, fruiting occurs.

that was an excellent description thanx heaps for that, we should make a rule that subs = subaeruginosa and subbs = pan subbs.
would someone need much colonized bark to transplant? or just a few mycelium covered chips?

an Australian thread about 'subs' there is a 99.99% chance that its about Psilocybe subaeruginosa as Panaeolus subbalteatus is very uncommon here, or at least very few people look for it. maybe call we should call them subaes instead as you cant mistake that for subbalteatus
