Subaeruginosa or not?
    #1576008 - 05/25/03 10:04 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Here's some pics from the blue mountains, they're badly dried out, unfortunately...

They're brown some that aren't so bad are more have a light brown cap, with dark stems. Some bits of the stems where they aren't dired so bad they are more white with a green-blue stain actually more green stain. They whole mushroom is has a shiny green-blue look after rinsing them.

They were found in woodchip mulch.

What do you think they are?

-sorry bout the poor image quality

Hard to say from those pictures, if they are a psilocybe they are well weathered and oxidized that is for sure but its a possibility. Describe them better and get some fresh specimens.

After playing around with the pics in photoshop, I'd say that yes- they are some type of active psilocybe.
I'm no expert on Australian mushrooms, so I'd wait up and see what bluemeanie(or any other knowledgable aussie) has to say about your mushrooms before you even consider eating them.

They look a lot like them, did they turn blue when bruised, or blue on the stem, if they did thats a good sign they are, they do look like they are a bit blue. However i'm not very experienced so i'm not going to say they deffinetly are.

I just picked a shitload today of these babies today at school, didn't even have to go huntin .

I've seen really abused and dried out samples about 50% as blue/black as that but never that totallly oxidised look. can't say much else as the photos are too small but looks like you are on to somthing interesting anyway...

First of all sorry again bout the crappy photos (dodgy cheap camera) also I was in a bit of a rush (didn't even manage to make my logon name right supposed to be Insomniac) and am pretty sure I can get bigger shots next hunt after sortin out the software better...anyway to the point....

The shrooms are tiny (I should've put a coin or somthin next to them). About 4-6 cm long with about 1-2.5 cm diameter cap... that's a kinda rough estimate... haven't got em in front of me at the moment.... Also they aren't black that's just the crap photos they are really lighter in colour like a dark brown and a couple that aren't so oxidized have light brown caps colour kinda like Ruskifile's pics above. They look more like the Eucalipta pics bluemeanie posted rather than the Subaeruginosa's Jimbu posted.

I found same looking ones at a couple of different locations and no they did not stain blue when damaged as they were all dried out but they looked as though they had dried damaged with stain, as in part of the stem was sorta white or translucent and the rest was that dark brown oxidesed look with definatley green-blue sections. The first lot I found I scraped a couple (as I haven't found Psilocybes B 4 and had to check) and even though they were dry, it was rainin' quite a bit and anyway I got green stain out of them. I looked at a book I got and read the part on Psilocybe genus again... anyway it said that Psilocybes often have a blueish or greenish cast. I never remember hearing about green before though.

I found 2 different kinds growin in the wood chips at different locations one kind was the one shown (I'm pretty sure a Psilocybe) and another was a larger variety maybe 1.5X or 2X bigger similar in color (although hard to tell, oxidised and dryed out) but the stems were all white and a bit thicker (definately no blue or green).

Its hard to tell from the photos - I've found they don't stain much at all when dry - let alone that dry. I'm guessing they would have lost a lot of potency anyways...
