How can I be happy if...

if all the pain that I see in people makes me feel like I shouldn't be enjoying life.

I feel like I should do something even though I can't.

Does anyone else share my dilemma?

Sometimes I see fat people and feel bad for them.  Knowing that they probably hate who they are, and would like nothing more than to change, makes me sad for some reason.  But, at the same time I know it's their fault, and I want to punch them for making the world uglier. 

I'm constantly torn about this.  It's odd :shrug:

A Zen monk once said we (us sitting there listening to him) ought to give money to anyone who begs on the street. And, he continued, we ought also to say something kind to them; presumably because you can find a friend where a dollar don't spend.

yeah i know how you feel. my mother's health is failing and i see her in pain quite a lot. it makes me feel like i shoudn't be enjoying life so much sometimes. there is also nothing i can do about her suffering.

Wise words indeed from the niteowl... I always try to live by the motto of it's better to light a candle, than to curse the dark Yes - there's horrid things in the world, but dwelling on them cannot make them go away, or improve.

Put something positive out into the world, and just see what unfolds...

It's easy to bitch (I know, truly I know!!!) but it's far more rewarding to look for the good

Heehee, like in the movie Little Nicky with Adam Sandler, and how he uses positive energy - "Feel the good!"

Handbook to Higher consciousness has this to say in pathways 7-9 on interacting with others.

7. I open myself genuinely to all people by being willing to fully communicate my deepeeest feelings, since hiding in any degree keeps me stuck in my illusion of separateness from others.

If your feelings are geniune and you come across someone and you feel you should "do something" open yourself up..

8. (this one is KEY in your situation) I feel with loving compassion the problems of others WITHOUT getting caught up EMOTIONALLY in their predicaments that are offering them messages they need for their growth.

im not even going to put the 9th one out there because i feel 8 hit the nail on the head.

Do what you can when you can...but dont get emotionally caught up...it maybe hard but we are all individuals with singular spirits on our paths twoards enlightenment and people need to go through things within themselves...all you can do is be there to smile and pat them on the back...Good luck and always keep that huge heart bro :peace:

How can it it be ignoring the world; by simply bemoaning the bad parts of it, a person would be hiding away from the world's crying need for people to be active and instrumental in its improvement.

Just doing little things can make a big difference - like sponsoring a child, or even simply buying clothes in a charity shop... or stopping and giving someone your time as Harmonic_Order mentioned regarding the Zen monk.

I remember a time I spent working on a community project in Manchester; it was sorting out a garden of a day-centre, it wasn't one of the glamourous projects like children's playschemes or working with people overcoming substance addiction, and at first I was disappointed (we didn't get to pick projects, we were assigned to them in work-teams) but it made people so happy, they were really touched by our actions. 

It felt so much better than just whingeing about poor community facilities, or lack of state spending...

If the world you see is malicious, you need some rose colored glasses.

Do not dwell on the bad things in life, if you do that is all you will see.

Instead....look for the good in your life and your life will change.
