interesting quote from the princess bride...
    #3829825 - 02/24/05 10:28 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

"life is pain, anyone who says differently is selling something."
-that guy who says "as you wish" to that chick in the movie. (forget his name)

what do you all think of this quote?

--------------------
hello, your name is life on earth
------------------------------------

"I traveled a long way seeking God, but when I finally gave up and turned back, there He was, within me! O Lalli! Now why do you wander like a beggar? Make some effort, and He will grant you a vision of Himself in the form of bliss in your heart." -the saint of the Kashmir Shaivism tradition: Lalli.

I think it makes no sense.

If I tell you life is pain, I then have something to potentially sell you, relief from the pain.

If I tell you life is pleasure, what do I have to potentially sell you based on that? Relief from your pleasure

That guy's name was Westley. Totally awesome movie. I love the part with the holocaust cloak.

Life is suffering. Suffering is always happening, and when happiness happens it always gives way to suffering eventually. The good news is that suffering has a cause, and that because it has a cause suffering can be ended. Wisdom, morality, and concentration, traits which can be cultivated within the mind, bring about an end to suffering.

A few have survived the Pit of Despair, but none have survived THE MACHINE!

Well. Life is pain, and there is no relief from it.. only respite.

People tend to be less upset if you tell them a movie is bad, and it has a few good spots.. than if you tell them a movie is good, and it has a few bad spots. Such is life.

no. this is the most common mistake about buddhism.

there is suffering.

but life is not suffering.

if we can eradicate suffering, then life can exist without it.

Yipes... I've totally envisioned my life as that very diagram MANY times in the past...

But I used to think I was the waveform in the diagram. Not so. It turns out I am the WHOLE diagram. The waveform itself represents the logical thinking mind, and the negative space AROUND that waveform represents the rest of me.

So yeah... I thought the waveform itself was "me", but it's just a tiny portion of our lives that comes about as a result of our brain's insistance on analyzation and insistance on assigning meaning to that which has no inherent meaning.

(Or, in other words, the ego masquerades as the self, tricking us each into believing we are but a tiny percentile of what we really are.)

I've also realized that the goal is to decrease the degree of "swing" involved, by making the frequency of the waveform tighter and tighter until you're just barely hovering back and forth across the center point.

By doing this, you drastically decrease the amount of control and influence the waveform's movements actually have on your emotional state.

(Think of the negative space of the diagram being the part of you that ISN'T the rationalizing mind. As the rationalizing mind's motion is lessened, the resulting effect on the negative space (the rest of you) is lessened.)

It's the same difference as you have when you take a boat out on the water. Go nice and slow, and your wake is just these little ripples... doesn't disturb anything too much. But pick up the pace, and before you know it you're creating gigantic waves and you're disturbing everything.

Since both "joy" and "sorrow" are just labels--a product of the brain's insistance of assigning meaning to that which has no inherent meaning--when one neutralizes the brain's ASSIGNMENT OF MEANING (which is what this diagram really illustrates) on emotional state, they are left with pure neutrality of ASSIGNED MEANING of emotion.

When emotion has no MEANING, it is just an incredible energy force that you feel within yourself. Pain and Love are both measured, NOT by the brain's assigned meaning of each, but by the INTENSITY of the emotion as it is experienced.

Therefore each emotion is experienced the same: simply as an incredible feeling deep within you; that you do not need to rationalize with the brain.

It's like colors in a painting. There are some blacks and reds here, and there are some blues and whites here... but both are beautiful. Both are incredible to experience.

We don't ask our brain to analyze the colors and categorize them into good and bad... we just accept the whole thing as a beautiful work of art that would not be the same if it had any less black or red OR white or blue.

Such is life.

So, if we can manage to control our emotions, will we be in command of just the waveform or the whole diagram ?

Well, by learning to control the waveform, you control the whole diagram indirectly, but not completely.

The boat's wake metaphor touches upon this best.

You can control the boat, so therefore you can control the size of the wake you give off... but you can't actually CONTROL the wake OR the water.

By controlling the waveform, you indirectly influence the negative space of the diagram, but do not actually gain "full control" over it.

Atleast that's my 2 cents.

I want to make note to be careful about how the word control is interpreted there. The goal JC pointed out was moving into non polar awareness which is SWEET to be in for as long as you can maintain it.

If you think keeping from joy will keep you from suffering then guess what? You will repress your joy because you fear suffering. THAT is still being in duality perception. I just wanted to make note that interpreting having control over your emotions to mean suppressing joy so as not to experience suffering isn't what its like to be in non polar consciousness nor is it the way there.

I don't know how far I can take this topic here without confusing the fuck out of most everyone because once you are seeing beyond duality perception, everything becomes a contradiction because its all true, good, and right just as much as its false bad and wrong and there is no longer separations distinguishing one from the other, including joy and suffering. The negative is just canceled out from experience at that point.

Its what we are evolving into consciously just the same as technology has canceled out the film negative to create a positive color picture. Technology has gone digital and so are we in consciousness.

Ask yourself what is the top and what is the bottom of planet earth? It's relative to where you are in space looking at it right? In space, where there is no gravity how do you know what standing "up" is when you are looking at the earth?

Are you feeling it? Its freaking disorienting to first find yourself in which is why many who move into it soon move back out. They experience that as a rise and fall and think that's just how it is.

I will give some of you who like to play with energy something to play with. Take the idea of what goes up must come down, like the rising and falling waves. What force brings pulls them down? Gravity.

When it comes to perceptions, you can put the center of gravity anywhere to create pulls just by where you place weights. You do this by making certain thoughts matter. The center of gravity is not in a fixed position when it comes to consciousness. It can be moved around to create pulls in any direction. That would be an example of where you have creative control over the flow of your emotions.

I love this analogy.

We used to need the negative (film) to create a positive (picture)... but now that we've technologically evolved to the point of digital, the old process is ditched... you no longer need the negative AT ALL... but due to our technological advances, you still get to keep the positive.

Such is life when one learns to move past dualistic thinking.

we don't? well, do we ever ask our brain to do..anything? come one now.,and are you saying that "we" all find that the mona lisa is beautiful..?and that if she was painted in only burnt orange and brown with chartuese lipstick..we'd find the same beauty in the painting?
