What is the $100 Laptop, really? The proposed $100 machine will be a Linux-based, with a dual-mode display?both a full-color, transmissive DVD mode, and a second display option that is black and white reflective and sunlight-readable at 3? the resolution. The laptop will have a 500MHz processor and 128MB of DRAM, with 500MB of Flash memory; it will not have a hard disk, but it will have four USB ports. The laptops will have wireless broadband that, among other things, allows them to work as a mesh network; each laptop will be able to talk to its nearest neighbors, creating an ad hoc, local area network. The laptops will use innovative power (including wind-up) and will be able to do most everything except store huge amounts of data.

That's pretty sweet. The sad thing is, I went to school in an upper-mid class Ohio suburb, and we didn't have computers as good as those in school. Those laptops are going to villiages in Cambodia with no electricity, according to the website.
And WTG Bill Gates, being a sleazeball as usual.

I love his line, "if you're gonna buy junk, at least buy microsoft junk"... well, paraphrased...
The actual quote:Quote:
"If you are going to go have people share the computer, get a broadband connection and have somebody there who can help support the user, geez, get a decent computer where you can actually read the text and you're not sitting there cranking the thing while you're trying to type," Gates said.
Of course, before his critique, Gates showed off a new "ultra-mobile computer" which runs Microsoft Windows on a seven-inch touch screen and is expected to sell for between $599 and $999.
Steve Jobs from Apple offered the guys at MIT free copies of Apple's OS-X for the laptop project, but they opted to go with open source unix instead.
Microsoft, once again showing the true color of their innovations.

I love how the brilliant Mr. Gates goes on and on about these being shared computers when they're not. What part of "one laptop per child" did he not understand? And he makes fun of them having hand crank power, well, what are they going to do if they don't have electricity at home? What microsoft product could they use in that situation, hmm?

A hand crank on a computer is just a really good idea. It makes you wonder why they dont have them yet. I've seen them for cell phones, but not laptops...

...not to mention that they wouldnt be "cranking" them while in using the laptops. I guess bill gates has never used a crank radio or anything before (I have a c. crane crank radio for emergencies & you only crank it periodically).
bill gates is just out of touch...and not seeing dollar signs.
