Extracting opiates from urine?

The other day a friend of a friend posed a hypothetical question to me, and I wasn't quite sure of the answer, so I thought I'd ask here.

My friend's friend mentioned that, for most opiates, there is a certain percentage that passes into the urine without being metabolised. Now my first reaction when he said this was yeah, but who would want to go through all the trouble of saving your piss to do some sort of extraction? Sounds like a lot of work for very little reward.

But he agreed with me, but then said that for someone who was on long term opiates, such as methadone maintenence or chronic pain, the amount of unchanged drug that they would be pissing out over a week or two could be pretty substantial. at 10% - 15% as the estimate of how much unmetabolised drug is excreted in the urine, which is the statistic my friend's friend found in several places, over a period of months it could really add up. Of course, in that case the person would have to freeze lots of piss ...

He said he heard about shamans drinking their piss after eating Aminitas, because something like 50% of the active ingredient in those passes unmetabolised into the urine ... so apparantly there's some precedent.

Anyway, assuming large enough amounts would end up in urine that it would be worth it to our hypothetical person, how would they go about extracting methadone from all the crap in urine? My friend's friend said he wasn't sure about the solubilities and all that. There must be a way - so, assuming this is even worth the time - how would that be done?

Thx for the info. I thought it was an intriguing question, he had me thinking for a few minutes the other day and I told him that I thought I knew where to ask .

You'd need to do extremely difficult separations that would require (in all likelihood) many many a/b extractions, distillations, and would probably invest so much energy in doing the procedure that you might as well by synth'ing the original compound.
