Cooner, the Racoon tells me that he is very consious of particulate size of substrate. No matter whats in it, if it is all close to the same size, one gets a more consistant growth in all stages. Then, add some nutients, to boot, like your talking about.

He runs grain hay through the chopper, down to bird seed size, some bird seed through the blender with the dull rubber blade just for a quick pulse to fracture it (not into powder, just cracked a bit), then adds the corn gluten feed, a wee bit of dextrose (powdered corn sugar - not corn syrup), a wee bit of light malt extract into it all, then presoaks it before PCing. The bulk substrate those jars are later mixed into - is the same thing. So, there is no change in the nutrient medium throughout.

Cooner is a frisky, happy, fun loving racoon.
