God Damn it WBS!

I inoculated a bunch of quart jars about 14 days ago using WBS for the first time. While simmering the WBS a lot of the kernels tore but I continued anyways. I inoculated all the jars, and kept them at my TIT at 83 degrees. For the first 6-8 days the mycelium was growing very rapidly. Then......They all stopped. Even the jars that were almost completely colonized, just.......paused.
This really sucks. The substrate doesnt seem dry so i dont think that is it. They havnt shown any growth for the last 6 days. I just ordered a bunch of syringes from spores101 to start all over. It really really sucks because i just put a money order in the mail for Tenn Stud pre-pasteurized Hpoo.
I hope I can keep the Hpoo bagged up for a good 2 weeks while my future jars colonize. Yes yes i know im already talking like i failed with these, but damn it its been 6-7 days and they completely froze! Im going back to rye, screw WBS.

I've had a lot of success with WBS. In fact it's my favorite spawn medium. Very nutritionally balanced, cheap, and colonizes quickly, and gives lots of inoculation points. By what means are you implementing gas exchange. Sounds like your substrate is starving for a little fresh air. If your sub is too wet, this can also slow/stall colonization. Next time try skipping the simmering step in the WBS prep, or at least cutting the time down significantly.

Sounds like gas exchange is the problem. I don't simmer at all. No need IMHO, if soaked properly.

Yup, i shook them like an armless man having a fantastic dream that he re-grew his hands and went straight for his penis...! I used tyvek so the gos exchange should be no problem. It was definately the over cooking.......
I dont know if to retry with WBS or just stick to what i have succeeded with, rye....

What are you using as a filter lid?
First time I used Tyvek I forgot to put a metal disk with holes in it over the tyvek. The tops of all my jars dried out and my jars stalled at 2/3 done.
Those jars are not a lost cause. First wait and see, They might finish just yet. Wait at least two weeks. You can still do G2G transfers with the mycelium that is in there. That's what I did with my stalled jars. I just dumped out the uncolonized grain and whent ahead and transfered the mycellium I had.
**sorry missed that last post. This one is still relevent tho.

Shit shit shit... 36 quart jars down the drain!!!!!!!!!! I still have like 30 lbs of WBS left over too. I think i should retry without simmering like Agar said.
My WBS has a lot of black sunflower seeds, is this a bad thing? I heard someone say to take them out, someone else said it doesnt matter.
Anyways how long is soaking for proper soaking of WBS?

The jar lids have wholes. One for inoculation and a larger one for GE. I used these same jars to colonize using rye not too long ago using same method.

Those jars don't need to go down the drain.
Prepair some new jars leaving some extra room. Just soak this time, Use agars method of achiving proper moisture content. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/3982155#Post3982155
Once those jars are PC'ed and cooled. Transfer the mycellium you have now to them. I find when doing G2G transfers the colonization time is very fast. within a week.
About the sunflower seeds I always remove them. Just because they don't need to be in there and it only takes 30 seconds to remove most of them.
Just cover the seed with water give it a stir and almost all the sunflower seeds will rise to the top. Just use a strainer to skim them out.

sometimes, when my jars are stalled but at least 50% colonized and there is no contamination on the uncolonized parts, i open up the jars and seperate the uncolonized wbs from the colonized part and simply case with the colonized part. it works well. try it out if your jars have stopped growing but you have a good size chunk of myc.
the uncolonized wbs will fall off the colonized chunk (the more stubborn wbs kernels need a little dusting to fall off the myc chunk) because the myc isn't holding it together.

Personally, I don't see why your freaking out. If I were you I would just use the stalled jars just as I would regular 100% colonized jars. As long as they are not contaminated, or more than a month old. If you want to be extra cautious when you spawn put a layer of ~1/2" of just poo on the top to resist contams. just my thoughts, any one feel differently?

did you soak AND simmer? I never soak my WBS, i just simmer for a 1/2 hr, rinse off with some cold water, let drain for a few minutes, and PC for 1 hr 1/2. I havent had a single jar contaminate on me using this method (minus my "im bored, lets try an open air g2g transfer in a dirty kitchen" experiment").
Keep fiddling around man, im sure you'll find the sweet spot. If you can colonize rye you sure as should be able to colonize WBS

i think u can still use those stalled jars for poo. they are all going to be colonizing anyway. dont waste all those jars. thats just too much time and effort spent in vain. good luck man.
