first WBS try , first WBS faliure
    #2004664 - 10/13/03 09:20 AM (18 years, 1 month ago)

Well I didnt even want to post, I was going to just try again without asking for help , then I thought about the fact I used a whole syringe for nothing!

I made quart jars , they looked ok, I PC'ed them they looked fine, and I finally found out what people mean by the smell of cook WBS, SHOT my load , of spores waited over a week and nothing has happened !

MY ONLY THEORY after thinking about what could have happened is that I "overcooked" the WBS, but it looked like pics I had seen of WBS(cooked)

anyway I am going to use straight millet and see what happens

what do you think I did wrong the first time ??????

another reason I thought I might have over cooked is I cooked it for like over 2 hours(it was a busy day) and I thought more wouldnt hurt

although it was the first time I used my new PC, so I kept turning it up high and then back to steady , to figure out its Presure control movements etc , and then up high just because I thought , grain is harder then rice

I have had much better luck doing a rice to wbs transfer when working with wbs. That shit colonises so fast when you do that. I have never had even one jar fail to colonise when doing this. I have not been so lucky using spores with wbs.

Are you sure the water content was right? You may have drowned the spores, although it sounds like you overcooked the shit.

Yeah man, IME mycelium innoculation is definitely the way to go with grain, wether it be liquid mycelium agar wedge or g2g transfer

Give them more time to germinate . 1 week may not be enough . How much spore solution did you inject into each jar ?
But my first guess as to what you did wrong ...................
Patience is a must when growing mushies , and you have already shown you are overly anxious and expecting to much to fast .
Good Luck
PS 1 hour is fine for future cookings , 2 hours should not have burned the grain , so do not worry much about that , just put those jars in warm dark place for 2-3 weeks and forget about them ....... "PATIENCE"

G2G is the best way. Hit up a cake if you can't get any grain to work but once yolu get one make sure to keep it for transfers. Don't case right away. Use it to hit up more jars.

If the conditions are right you should see myc. within a week. Any longer and something is not right.

Maybe bacteria? Maybe not warm enough? Water content not right?

"You may have drowned the spores"

Can to much water lead no growth at all?????, I thought it would lead to growth followed by contam

anyway about using BRF cakes to start WBS, I am going to slice off a chunk of a REALLY nice tapalpa cake I have jiven and throw that into a jar of PCed millet

sound ok?
rather then raising a jar for growing on millet I cut a healthy cake???

I will have to read about this transfer thing, in the the archives as I am sure it is not just throwing the myceluim in right

(please say its that easy)......but anyway, I am sure it more complex (real clean etc?)

yes you can cut a cake. You could also get a cheese grate and grate a whole cake into a few jars. Just make sure it is colonized all the way through the middle to prevent contams. Also yes too much water can create contamination not drown spores, but the contamination will prevent germination and growth of spores.

my friend has been having good success boiling wbs theb steam sterilizing in jars via pf-tek.
Boil for 45mins to an hour then drain in a strainer for 3-4 hours or more if desired then scop into jars add vermiculite on top after you've filled your jars, then boil the jars in a pot for an hour.

Lid off mycelium drops lid on, mission complete ?????

please say thats what you mean, if thats the case I know a PC that will be running for days:)

I think boiling for 45 minutes and draining is also for water content meant. This is the way I find the right water content all the time.

But boiling wbs is more difficult than straight millet because it contains red millet and they explode earlier than other grains by boiling process so that causes contams after you pc and inoculate jars.

I would try and use a few small pieces of cake.

Turn the oven on low heat, and work over the oven, with the new jars open as little as possible. Do It Fast.

Use lysol, wash your hands, and your tools.

Another thing you might wanna do is dunk the chunk in some h2o2 (peroxide) to ensure that it is sterile.

After you get a couple chunks in, shake the jars as much as possible, so you have multiple points of innoculation throughout the jar

I might be too late. Before doing the G2G it's nice to dip the mycelium chunk into hydrogen peroxide (3%) and then palce in jar.

The first time I attempted grain I innoculated while the grain was too hot which killed the mycelium. Now, I let my cool overnight.

Try popcorn that stuff rocks, mine began colonizing in about 5 days. I innoculated 11/12, it is now 13 days later (so 8 days of colonization) and several of my pint jars are almost done, I expect all 12 to be done by december 1 or so.
