I am wondering if anyone knows of any strains of weed that would do well in the southern california climate with little help. It will be my first grow, and I want something very simple and easy to work with while I get accustomed to how the plant works and grows. I want something that can be generally left alone for a little while without too much of a problem. Remember, I live in SoCal, so very little rain. Keep it in mind, but don't let it discount any ideas you may have. I am really eager to try my hand at this.
I am also considering getting some lowryder as a plant I can put in my backyard....does it need any special attention?

san diego's weather is good enough to have plants out all year but i'm waiting till mid-march to put some babies outside. as far as strain goes, anything will do really. as long as you water when they need it and fertilize when they need it you'll get some buds.

Damn, that would be nice to have a place outdoors to let loose
How about california skunk
or white widow, suppose to be the strongest strain Good luck on what ever you do.

from what i understand, white widow is highly over rated. then again, maybe people who say this just got widow from bad growers. i think it is not entirely the strain, as much as how it is grown. like, different strains have different potential potencies, but it is really up to the grower to determine if they will reach their potential. besides, WW seeds are expensive as fuck, and i am just now experimenting with growing. and i am talking about growing outside(I am too cheap to pay for an indoor system, and my living conditions would stop me from using an indoor system regardless of my money), and i think that that would put even more risk onto my plants as far as whether or not they will survive. so yea, not gonna spend money on ww just yet

Strains that do well in southern cali? Hmm well basicly what kind of high do you like? Basicly dude you can grow any strain you want, so some research on outdoor growing, learn what you need to do and know, and let the sun do her job.
Id personaly go with a 10 to 12 week pure sativa, if I could only pick one, but hey If i had a good outdoor spot in southern cali, I would grow many strains

Ha, I don't care which kind of high. I can't smoke; piss tests. I want to grow because I love growing plants. Also, I hate the marijuana market with a pasion. People make so much money by overcharginf for this stuff, so I plan on growing and either giving out the weed free or charging just enough to cover nutes and seeds. I mostly wanna grow just to grow. But also I really want to be able to help people out with conquering these high prices. 15 bucks a gram=bullshit. 5 bucks a gram, TOPS with me. That's my plan.

Might want to think about making seeds aswell then, spred the genes and means for people to grow there own aswell. Buy some good seeds, make a few thousand of them. Sell em for a buck a seed.
IMO please stay away from lowryder or lr cross's. I really dont think your position requires this strain of hemp origin. Its just not worth it at all. Grow some powerfull dope Old school stuff, Big Sur Holyweed is a pers fav, panama red, oxacan, santa marta gold, etc.

can't grow in hard clay soil. you gotta pack in soil to plots and either dig holes or pack in pots. i'd opt for pots because digging in hard clay soil sucks balls.

Yea, it does suck. But what kind of soil to use? also, how big would a pot need to be for a plant? or how deep/wide should I dig my holes?
and i plan on making my first gneration or two for seed stock. and i will give out the seeds for free(not all of em, just like, 5 seeds per person, or....well, how many seeds usually grow on bud plants?)

yea dude. i went out for lunch today, and i could see my breath. at 1 in the afternoon in cali, with the son shining, i could see my breath. THAT'S FUCKED UP!!! THE END IS NEAR!!!!!!!!! This is San Diego, damnit.
But yes, it is getting kind of cold, but you know SoCal, our longest "winter"/times of cold are 2 weeks. And it NEVER hits freezing in san diego, so I don't think it will be a problem.

Also, I know I should search this, but how necesarry are nutes? And if they are really, truly, badly needed, what would be the cheapest/easiest nutes to go with? remember, this is not so much about yield, or potency, because I am not selling/smoking.

so you've never grown before and now you want to be a breeder?
slow down there, bub
good seeds are relatively easy to get a hold of, someone who's never grown before growing for just seeds doesn't make much sense at all. grow some plants, learn how to take care of them and how they grow, hopefully harvest them and get to smoke them. repeat that a few times, then maybe worry about breeding for seeds if you're really into that idea.
cannabis really isn't a hard plant to grow, but your questions lead me to believe breeding or even thinking of growing enough to sell is a bit much at this point. having high expectations for your first grow will usually leave you disappointed... your first mission should be just to grow a mature, seedless female plant, start to finish.
anywho, that's FWIW, I'm not trying to discourage you, just trying to inject a little logic into the discussion .
as far as strain suggestions go, I'd go with any early, heavy 'indica' variety myself
