Hello all....

I've been doing some tests recently, and have found some good stuff. i have tried 4 different types of water tests inside my cool mist humidifier.

Bottled water (puritian, delivered big jugs)
distilled water, bought 1 gal at a time
tap water
tap water with holmes bacteriostat water treatment.

with the first 3 i haven't noticed a difference. Contam city after the 3rd flush. but recently i hae been adding this Holmes bacteriostat water treatment to my cool mist, and this has a made a world of difference.

does anyone have any experience using this product, or anything similar? it only takes a cap full per 1 gal of water. Lasts a long time, and cheap too.

this stuff has made a significant difference in my cultivation.

got it at walmart, next to the humidifiers.

yup... just a capfull in your water added to your humidifier, and your set.

found at walmart, or online.

anyone know anything wrong with this? (i know everyone has info in everything... and there usually is always a down side to every situation)

why haven't i heard of anyone else using this product? works great!

List the active ingredients and might to able to be more specific. I would guess that Alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride is one of the actives, which is the same quat (Quaternary ammonium compound) also found in Lysol, bathroom cleaners, Clorox wipes, toilet bowl cleaners, tile cleaners, and most disinfecting household cleaners.

There are a lot of different brands of evaporative humidifier bacteriostatic solutions out there. They are meant to keep mildew growth from clogging the filters. So, if the chemical concentrations are safe enough for us to breath, I don't see why they would be very detrimental to fruiting mushrooms. If they actually reduce contams, they may become very popular. Be careful with any experiments that increase the concentration beyond factory specified amounts. You don't want a cat with three heads, or a mushroom with seven eyes.

but seriously... my lab is in a basement, and not the "most" steril of conditions, but it'll do. Without this stuff, i see contams even with using bottled purified water.

after adding this to my humidifier water, i see no contams... i can usually flush out a casing till like 6th flush. and i see no differences with mushroom productivity.
  I have not had any issues with potentcy, or helth risk. (i've eaten a ton of them since trying)

i'll get the chemicals in the label when i get home tonight. :wink:

actually.... i've been thinking of adding a cap full to my water i use for soaking the grains in.... Wish me luck.


i still don't see why more people aren't using this... it's readily available in your local walmart.

I'd be very careful adding chemicals to spawn, it may be toxic in higher concentrations, and 1 cap full in mushroom food vs. 1 cap full in a humidifier is a bit different, it's much less concentrated when mixed with the air in the room, and much more concentrated when directly absorbed by the grain.

Albeit I'm not a chemist and know nothing about the toxicity of the chemical at hand, but just be careful. Be aware what you put in your body, and what you feed to your mushrooms, which may go in not only your own body.

I don't see how something to your humidifier water would reduce contamination. Were you actually getting bacteria in your substrates?
