You'll have to understand that, normally, this forum functions very well and focus is put on the discussion of spiritual/philosophical ideas. I've been here awhile and I've seen myself and many others grow as a result.

You are right. This forum does need to be moderated. We've relaxed the rules of this place, after splitting this forum, to the point where we are allowed to fully scrutinize, discuss, debate, and analyze ideas, just as philosophy requires, as long as we utilize those abilities towards the ideas and points in question as opposed to the person making them. One rule, and certainly not one that is difficult to enforce.

We've all seen what results when someone is allowed to do so. One person simply asks another to substantiate a point they have made so that one would be able to decide for themselves if their point has substance and reflects reality (I'd like to think that spirituality and philosophy are set up to encourage and develop critical, free thinking, after all), and suddenly one finds themselves being analyzed, and having their behavior and personality brazenly defined. Many pages later, the issue is directly brought to everyone's attention, begging for their opinion on one's personal character. One rule in the forum, and if it is allowed to persist, this forum, at least in the context of the specific threads in question, becomes dysfunctional.

How much insight and understanding results from telling someone else who they are, their intentions, what they should do instead, etc. etc. etc. etc.? This simply is not the place for it. It isn't hard for those who actually are interested in discussing philosophical/spiritual ideas to focus solely on said discussion. :lol:

Yeah, you came on a bad day. Usually this is quite a wonderful place full of mutual exchange of ideas and personal growth.

But ya know, everyonce in a while we just gotta have a drama-fest. It was pretty bad a few months ago, and thus the existence of the Mysticism forum. Search for the terms "Swami" or "Swama" and you'll have yourself a nice chunk of forum history...

You're rules for your site are pretty good, albiet a little constricting. but I have to say the the ones about logic and eliminating contradictions won't fly in here since some of us have "Faith in Paradox" as I like to call it and refuse to rely solely on logic as the ONE TRUE WAY to gain knowledge.

Just type in "Logic" in the search engine and you'll see what I mean. It's been discussed to death recently so I don't really feel like going on about it.

But anyways, please don't let this scare you away from here, it's truely an awesome place!

The problems here at S&P stem from the low maturity level of it's members.  I don't say this critically or to judge, or to put anybody down.  There's nothing wrong with being immature.  It's just a simple fact -- we're young drug users who've happened upon some ideas that seem bigger than ourselves.  We like to discuss them.  It's important to remember, I think, that our ideas might seem so large because we're still so small.  If we were the great beings we think we are, we probably wouldn't bicker and aruge as much as we do.

It's no secret that those of us who post here are either children or adults who act like children.  I don't think we have to hide from the fact.  It's not something that can be changed by imposing rules and guidelines.  It's not something that can be be changed by splitting the forum.  It can only be changed by us, as individuals, learning to accept and be content with whatever this forum has to offer, contributing where we can, and remembering that if we can't contribute positively, we shouldn't contribute at all.  These are the best guidelines for us to adopt, if we wish it.  They don't need to be imposed.

I must say, S&P has never been a more peaceful place for me ever since I started following those guidelines.  What's your S&P like these days?

I'm not sure what the purpose behind coming in here and telling us that "if it were Yahoo, you'd be banned" really is.  If Yahoo is so much better, why not simply stay there and ignore us?  Personally, I'd be interested in what this Yahoo spirituality forum has to offer, and am glad you've alerted me to it.  But why come over here and "suggest" to us how we should behave?  It just doesn't seem productive.  Is it realistic to think that you can create a Shroomery account, and with Post #1, change the way the whole place is run, raising it up to some sort of new standard?  This forum has become what it is over years and years of growth and development.  It's whole existence is dependent on that evolution, and upon the thousands upon thousands of contributions it's members have made since this forum's inception.  Something like that is not going to transform with one post from one new member, regardless of how insightful and well-worded it is.

Anyway, welcome aboard.  Looks like you're in for a queasy ride. :wink:

Welcome to The Shroomery.

The P&S community here at this website goes through phases... and you will not fully understand the social dynamic of this forum by simply lurking for one day. That said, you did put your finger on some of the major problems this forum is currently facing.

This forum has a proud tradition of making lemonade from lemons.

Don't fret, some of us use this forum's current state as a chance to Philosophize, or at least, to preach. Often we spout our spirituality or personal philosophy, WHILE discussing ways we can improve this P&S community. :smirk:

To understand this forum, you must look at it in the context of this website. This is a mushroom website... with a philosophy and spirituality room. It is not  a S&P website with a forum about drugs.

This forum works best when it feels like a bunch of folks drinking beers, passing a joint and sitting around a bonfire... we don't focus as much on REAL, LEGITIMATE Philosophy... rather something more primal. We wait, chill, hang out... and allow Philosophy to happen.

Most of us here are hippies, in one form or another. Formalizing the rules would be counterproductive. You think this place is bad now? You should've seen it when we had MORE than one rule.

However, I agree... some enforcement of our one rule would do this community some good. But hey, we only have three mods... perhaps they've been busy this weekend... week... month... doesn't matter... some here fear The Mods more than the regular flamers...

In this forum, shit happens.

We are discussing the topics that spawn wars, after all.

The best fence is an open pasture.

One thing I'll say about this forum as a whole: We'll give you the benefit of the doubt, at least until we get to know you. I trust you'll return the favor.

I also, wanted to say, this forum gets a lot of traffic.

If we followed the thread creator's advice and banned all but a couple... this place'd be a ghost town.

Here at The Shroomery, we work with what we've got... and attempt to include as many as possible.

Something about that PHILOSOPHY must've worked... cause we're a virtual community that'd virtually fill a 30,000 person town.

Many countries have smaller ARMIES!
