Store bought manue?
    #520991 - 01/14/02 09:37 PM (23 years, 1 month ago)

Just wondering if I could pasteurize store bought composted "steer manure" and innoculate it with colonized rye. What does the "Steer" in steer manure mean anyways and why do they add that? I will be moving into the city and living in an aptartment soon. I don't think a bale of straw would make my landlord too happy. Manure comes in bags so I think it would be a lot easier to conceal. Anyone know of any store bought manure teks? Seems to me like the only manure teks are the ones that use manure from the horse stables.

steer (n.) -
1 : a male bovine animal castrated before sexual maturity -- compare STAG 3
2 : an ox less than four years old

what is the significance of steer manure? Why does the package stress that it's steer?

Store bought manure doesn't work. i'm not sure why but it doesn't :(
If you decide to try it anyways don't waste all your spawn test it out first and see for your self.
hope this saves you some trouble.

Avoid the composted stuff, it is hit or miss, very inconsistent.
Dehydrated manure does work consistently, but it is not as good as stable or field manure.
If you are gonna use dehydrated or composted from the store mix it with some rye grass seed and perlite or vermiculite. 4:1:1 moisten to field capacity and pressure cook at 15 psi for 1-2 hours depending on quantity of substrate.

The dehydrated works good for me, no leaching neccessary. Of course I prefer field picked pies, but you gotta do what you gotta do, and the stuff does work. Hoffmans DEHYDRATED COW MANURE 1-1-1 from K-mart.

Composted manure DOES work, as long as it is not fully composted.
My experience allows me to draw this conclusion.Store bought is usally TOO far composted. Mushrooms are part of the decomposition process. If Decompositions is done, meaning that the composted manure is basically rich dirt, then there is nothing for the mushrooms to do. There for, it is no use to mushroom cultivation.
