possessions * 1
    #5206043 -

The fool lives around the idea of "my" and "mine": my nation, my religion, my race, my family, my wealth, my children, my parents...he lives around "my" and "mine." And he has come alone and he will go alone; nobody brings anything into the world and nobody takes anything from the world. Alone, empty-handed we come; alone, empty-handed we go. The wise knows it; hence the wise claims nothing as "mine." He uses things, but he does not possess them. Using is perfectly good -- use all the things of the world, they ARE for you. The world is a gift from God -- use it, but don't possess it. The moment you become a possessor, you cannot use things -- the things start using you. The moment you become a possessor, in fact you are possessed by your things, you become a slave. And the very idea of possessing is stupid. How can you possess anything? You don't even possess your own being. What else can you possess? You are not even a master of yourself.

I think it is like with the other 'boundings' and attachments.
The more we think we have them under control, the more they start to control us...
Quite hard to stay in balance..not starving, freezing, burning...
Perhaps our world is made for us to posses, as we are possesed by it with our cause for physical existence. This might include for example planning for the future, what can be an aspect of posessions or attachments, as there are more, perhaps in cause with this material existence.

hard to say.
some possessions make me genuinely happy to have.
and some make me feel trapped.

sometimes they are the same posessions.

I try to remain unattached to objects and persons, but it is very difficult.

Oh believe me, I'm trying, but I cannot honestly say that if my car was stolen or a family member or good friend died, I would be able to remain unattached.

As long as you are not bound to these things, possessions are okay to have. And yes, I do believe that possessions are okay to like, or maybe even love. Like my parents, who I consider a prized possession, I love them both dearly, but their death will not spell my own demise.
I love, but I am not bound. I am unlike a dog to it's master. I do not need them to continue on.

Possessions serve no porpose when it comes to you living your own life, you must see this. You really don't need anything in this world but yourself. As long as you are not bound, you are free.

Hey sheik i just read your other post to we got alot in common i grew up in a house of hoarders and i learned just how much possesion can affect people. My mom is obsessed with everything she has, and she doesnt even use a fraction of it, but its hers goddammit and anyone who tries to get her to throw something away is against her. its sad reallly. Early on she taught me to act that way too, but ive since seen how pointless that attitude is.

I disagree with one thing you said tho man, we do own ourselves, adn that is ALL we have. The one single thing you can control is your actions.

Surely no one can completely claim ownership over anything since at most we are only borrowing these things from our children, but by taking control of them we can benefit from their presence.

Also, certainly no one can take any of this from this world as no one will ever leave this world (except for perhaps in a space shuttle). Any man can see that he is of this earth completely. We are made of the things of this earth and we shall become the things of this earth once more when we die. We go nowhere.

I used to think I was non-attached to my girlfriend and the life we shared, and that she could die or leave me and I wouldn't lose a moment's peace. When she left me, I was devastated. Moving back in with my parents was excruciating: I fought the whole experience, became angry, went into denial. I remember feeling so shocked and disappointed with myself that I was feeling this way; I was supposed to be "better" than that. But that was just deluded pride masquerading as non-attachment. I experienced all of this because my attachment was so deep rooted that I was not even aware of it, and, thinking that I had attained a state of non-attachment, I made no effort to oppose attachment in my mind.

Attachment is like oil that stains a rag. The rag might be pure and white, but the attachment which has absorbed it's object into the fabric of our mental continuum is a stain so deep and so stubborn that it is very difficult to remove and make clean. Attachment is like a ruthless enemy lurking around every corner of our mind, waiting for the opportunity to strike. We should be watchful for this enemy all of the time, and thrust the spear of non-attachment into his belly whenever he appears.

It's easy to believe we're non-attached when all our attachments are presently satisfied. It was easy to believe I was non-attached to my girlfriend because she was in my life in her all splendour, and there was no external indication that this circumstance would ever change. Because our minds are this way, it's far better to continuously generate the causes of non-attachment, without ever ceasing, and without any thought or concern for attaining the actual result of becoming non-attached. If we say to ourself "I am not attached", it means we are on dangerously unstable ground. Not only are we neglecting to maintain our guard against the enemy of attachment, we are not even aware that he is stalking us.

To generate the cause of becoming non-attached, all we have to do is remember that becoming attached to people and objects serves no purpose and is only painful. We can think about all the times our attachment, which promises so much happiness when it first appears, has let us down and caused us only suffering.

Attachment to people and objects is completely unrealistic. Everything we are attached to now will be separated from us at the death time. The time of our death is completely uncertain. It might happen in 80 years, or in 8 minutes. We might die as we're contemplating what we shall do next week or next year. When somebody asks us if we're free for dinner that evening, we cannot say for certain that we are free, because by the time of our dinner appointment we might be dead. All that separates this life from the next is a single breath.

Death is like a razor sharp blade hanging precariously over each of our necks. When the right conditions are assembled, the blade will fall without warning or indication, chopping off our head. In samsara, all our hopes are eventually crushed and our dreams inevitably destroyed. Knowing this, what sense is there in seeking happiness in objects of attachment? Now is the time to invest in the inner wealth of our limitless spiritual potential.

How powerfully true Ped. I have experienced this truth in my attachments and denial of such. Thank you for sharing this important point.

attachment to a person, or a posseson with sentiment, is not wrong nor is anyone immune to it. I lost a one of my closest grade school friends earlier this year, and I cried and asked God why and proceeded to get wasted to cover the hurt. this is normal human reaction, and EVERYONE, even Jesus Christ himself lost someone I'm sure and went through grief.

We grieve because we love, and to love is the closest a human can come to God. Perhaps this is why it is so hard when we lose things, but with grief there are always two paths, further grief, or finding love in something else. Love comes with a cost, and that is, and always will be, that all good things must come to end. We all will die, and things will break, or be stolen or lost, but to let the fear of loss rule your life is to give up. That is no way to live life.

Sheik is right, we were all born with, and will die with nothing. That doesnt mean you shouldnt grieve for that which you love. It means only that in the end all the love you have means nothing if you have no love for yourself, and for God.
