;D excellent!

I'm sure the well is not REALLY 16 seconds deep. So does 16 seconds deep not constitute as genuine knowledge?

oh no! That's not what it's saying at all!

It's just a demonstration of looking at velocity in one dimension. The cave men are unable to measure the actual length of the well, but they can measure the time it takes for an object to free fall into the well. Since gravitational acceleration is constant then distance can be calculated from time.

So it's not about true or false knowledge, it's about defining your units of measurement. Because arbitrary unit values are our primary faculty of identifying patterns in our experience.

I find it interesting that the cave men indeed COULD calculate the distance from time IF they knew the equation V(t)=1/2(gt^2)+Vot+Yo ... but I'm going to guess then real cavemen did not. So if well depth was measured this way then they would be compeletly unaware that the speed with which the rock was falling was increasing with time, and so the ratio of distance traveled to time is not constant.

We might say that the cave man is ignorant or the truth, or that his perception is misaligned with reality. But if we think about it closer, he is not measuring length at all! But ONLY time... The relationship between TIME to DISTANCE does stay constant and so the use of time units for the measuring of length is pragmatic. It serves it's function, and a rock thrown down a well of a certain depth will consistently hit the bottom at a certain time...

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's all about finding patterns...

Nice, and funny at the same time.

Not to be a pill but how different are we really? We apply our human reason/theories, the same as these guys did, to our modern problems. No wonder we dont know what dark matter is or the like. I like this cartoonist.
