This is the response I made to the post "Home made filter discs. I cut and pasted it here for the information value in case anyone else wanted to try it. After reading the response from Puscle, I realize that I wasn't clear that it's not a good idea for the reasons I lay out in my response. I was going for a touch of sarcasm with the last sentence. The original post follows this edit.... "A point of info... Tyvek is an air infiltration BARRIER. It is used as a house wrap during construction to PREVENT air infiltration. It allows moisture vapor to pass through it so your insulation does not get damp, therefore reducing the insulations "R" value. To put it simply, it will stop air from passing through, yet allow moisture to escape. No air, and loss of moisture. Does that sound good to any of you? Yes I know. It was a sarcastic response to the post "Home made filter discs" I decided to cut and paste it so everyone would realize it wasn't a good idea. I should have been more clear. Sorry.

from www.tyvek.com: DuPont Tyvek? spunbonded olefin provide the unmatched combination of protection, breathability, and durability. The product is lightweight, easy to handle, and provides superior protection from water, dirt, dust, UV and IR radiation and many chemicals. Other uses for products made of DuPont Tyvek? spunbonded olefin: Agricultural Covers Tree Base Wraps Ground Protection Freeze Control Athletic Field Covers Cotton Bale I think the key here is breathability: I don't see any reason why you should not be able to use Tyvek.
