YATQT: Yet Another Tyvek Question Thread

Just got my package of free USPS Tyvek envelopes and I have a question.
How do you make sure the tyvek is sterile? Alcohol?
Or is it not an issue?
Thanks.

Oh, OK. Duh. So I take it the tyvek is breathable enough to let out the pressure that builds inside the jars as they heat up?

Yup, but as i found out its a good idea to have the tyvek overlap your jars a little. You'll also want to make sure you get the jars on real tight.

You mean, the lids?
You use the piece of tyvek instead of the normal metal lid, right?
Is it safe to use the part of the envelope that has ink on it? LOL...

No, what you want to do is cut the tyvek in circles, you can use the inner lid as a tracing aid. I like to cut them just a little bit bigger than the lid though, also i just use a exacto knife to do the job. Yes the part with inkcan def. be used. It can bleed at little when it gets pressure cooked, but it wont hurt anything. After you get them cut out you place the inner lid on the jar, place the tyvek disc on top of the inner lid and then place the ring on after that. Now you have a jar all ready to be pressure cooked.

What benefit does tyvek have over polyfill + cofee filters?

In my opinion they are pretty much in the same category as eachother. I dont like cofee filters because they're not nearly as strong as the tyvek is. And compared to polyfill its a little neater and looks more professional. BUt thats just my opinion. And i like using a product that i can get for free, and delivered to my house.

Amen to that!
Cool. Can't wait to try it out on my next batch.. I don't have any contams after 10 days with 2 open holes, though. But you can never have too much protection.
Now I just need to pick up some bandaids.

is tyvek reusable? I mean, would one have to cut out circles every time for every jar?

I wouldn't use it again...I usually turn my jars over at 75% colonization which causes the tyvek to be a little wet when the cakes are birthed. I've also had mycelium growing on the tyvek...
just get an x-acto knife, put on some good music, smoke a bowl, and cut out filters for an hour. you'll have plenty.

Does it matter which side of the tyvek is facing the substrate? I was also wondering if anyone uses tyvek as an air filter in a martha type closet, and how often it would need replaced.
