Folding@home
    #5119397 -

I was going through the preferences on my account here and noticed a folding@home username blank.  I put in mine, "Funk", and it says it is invalid.  It just irked me because there's a space for it and I can't get it to work.

Does anyone use folding@home here?  I left mine on while I went on vacation (over a week) and got a bunch of WUs done

What exactly is Folding@Home?

I'm sure I can find the answer easily, but I'm lazy and want to ask here.

A program that uses your cpu to fold proteins that universities can use to develope new medicines. I think... hopefuly somebody can say more about it than I can.

the first, stickied thread in the Science and Technology forum:

I should mention that this program uses the LOWEST priority on your system.  That means that pretty much ANY other program that needs CPU power will get priority ahead of F@H.
Don't make the mistake of not installing it thinking it will 'slow down your system'.  It uses a very tiny amount of memory and does not interfere with your PC whatsoever, since it gives up CPU power to whatever else needs it.

Everyone should be running this.

This program uses a series of (what I would assume are highly intensive) equations to predict the way a particular protein will "fold" once it has been synthesized.

Kind of like a fishing expedition. The basic principle is similar to SETI: There's so much freakin data available that it makes use of millions of personal computers to "crunch" it all.

I just started folding. Just wondering if I have to do something to get my folding rate bar thingee under my name?

I still think that folding is a government conspiracy to spy into peoples computers.
