i've been using my school email account, and it's just getting to be a pain because of how limited it is regarding sending files and it's just not user friendly at all. what are the best free email sites? i heard something on the radio about yahoo doing something new and different recently.

Gmail if you're talking about non-sensitive information. I'd suggest hotmail or yahoo for sensitive info. Always register with a fake name, address, etc..

please, please don't trust this advice
POP/webmail e-mail is sent in cleartext. That alone means you shouldn't trust it for anything genuinely sensitive. Add to that, any free web-mail provider will probably surrender your e-mail records and IP access records to law enforcement agencies at the slightest motivation. Tradition e-mail is NOT secure, it was never designed to be.
Gmail is a great service, I like it and use it for my personal e-mail. However, if I was dealing with anything genuinely sensitive, I would either use an anonymous remailer or an encrypted e-mail service like hushmail. For added security, I would probably run the remailer or access the encrypted service through a secure proxy service like TOR or JAP.

Hushmail is only encrypted if the people you are emailing also have an account with hushmail.
No e-mail provider is totally secure. I was just stating that gmail is one of the LEAST secure imho.
The most secure is probably your ISP email account. As long as your ISP does not give out information at the drop of a dime.
The best you can really do with free email providers is to signup (while proxying) with a fake name, address, etc. Always login while proxying through a highly anonymous server. Get a program such as PGP (both sender and receiver) to encrypt&decrypt messages on both ends.
