If you haven't joined yet, give it a try! Our team is at 89 in the rankings which is a huge jump over last year.... but alas, our numbers are DECLINING!
You too can have a sexy double helix under your name, like all the cool cats who fold!
and even if you don't get a big long one, you're still representing the team. We're almost at 7 million points, we need a few more long term folders to help keep us in the race.

Not really... around 600 shroomery members fold at home, but only the top thirty or so get a helix.
I've been folding for a couple of years on my paltry processor, I'm still only at 100 or so

Yeah, that would be a cool move. Someone suggested it in the WA&F helix thread, but I guess Ythan is pretty busy.
It would be cool if it was a non-linear scale, so that even small amounts got a certain amount of helix, but it got harder and harder to make it bigger as you got closer to the top (if you see what I mean?).

This computer that I'm on right now is already incredibly slow - once I get my main computer fixed again(which should be pretty soon now), I'll probably give it a try. That one has tons of memory and 3+ ghz processor.

Here it is fee, the official folding@home shroomery webpage:
http://www.shroomery.org/index.php/par/24037
Folding@Home is a distributed computing project which studies protein folding, misfolding, aggregation, and related diseases. It uses novel computational methods and large scale distributed computing to simulate timescales thousands to millions of times longer than previously achieved. The client software is designed such that for every computer that joins the project, there is a commensurate increase in simulation speed.

Join up ppl! I dont know why anyone wouldnt.
1. Running console version as a service takes up MINIMAL amounts of RAM/Resources. My main home PC is a 1.2ghz AMD mkay? It runs it throughout the day.
2. this program runs on the lowest priority possible. That means, if you start -any- program, F@H will say "please, take as much CPU power as you need, i shall yield". But it will always use any spare CPU cycles. You can see how much its using when u hit alt+ctrl+del in the process tab. Your CPU will always be at 100%.
3. You are finding a cure for cancer while cleaning out your cat's shit box. Doesnt that feel nifty?
Newbies: The console version is the easiest, and simplest way to just intall and forget. KEEP IN MIND that when you download the console, it is NOT your typical 'install' file. The folder you run it from is the folder it will use. So create a folder in C:\program files\Folding@Home and run it from there the first time. It will ask if you should run as a service, enter yes. (makes it auto start on boot). Our team # is 12679 Check on the FAH website to see if your name is available! I remember like 3 other ppl were running under 'rune' (lucky mine is spelled all fucked up with caps). Try and make your name unique. Your Shroomery name is probly the best. Use the SAME name for each PC you install this on. Dont worry about advanced options.
The console will download each 'core' by itself, and each work unit by itself. Your record will start showing up on our team page only after you've completed a work unit.
If you want a little task bar icon, and maybe check out the graphical images of the molecule you're working on, download the 'regular' version, but really its a waste of task tray space. Run the console+service one and it wont get in your way.
I currently have 4 PC's running. Only 1 of those is a real 'power' PC.
Join up dudes!

I can't install it on my work PC, and for my laptop at home I'm just afraid that no matter what you say about it yielding priority, World of Warcraft will run slower with it on.

Heh, i know how you feel dude, playing WoW is already a pain on my 1.2ghz AMD, so before i play i usualy hit ctrl+alt+del and turn off any processes that i wont be using that day.
You can also do this for F@H. On startup, FAH loads: winFAH.exe which in turn loads the current core the WU needs. Right now i see FahCore_65.exe
Have it running, and when you feel like WoW and reeeeely wanna free up those few megs of RAM to squeeze everything outa yer laptop, just hit alt+ctrl+del, gotto process tab, and click on winFAH.exe and 'end task'. The core will shut down automaticaly a few seconds later when it cant find the winFAH.exe.
Dont let lazyness conquer you dude! Help kill cancer! How many hours that you use your laptop do you play WoW? I'm sure thats not the only thing you use it for. It takes me 5 seconds to end that process when i feel like playing.

wooo! yay recruiting drive!
Don't feel bad that you're ranked 300 of (whatever number there is of people) when you first start... you'll fly through the ranks within a week or two, past all the people that just installed it, used it a day, then gave up.
Click the link in my first post, and check out the first few pages of that thread, I started off excited to be number 125, now I'm number 5! (I was at 3 for a little while too, till goobler kicked me down a notch )
