Cake/Casing Question..

When making a casing using fully colonized cakes (BRF/VERM) Is it better to crumble cakes into marble sized balls or would it be better to use a type of grinder that would NOT add any heat ?

put your cakes in ziplock baggies and squeeze out the air. now just crumble them as well as you can with your hands. in teh bag youll be contam free and you can knead it for 10 min if you wish; finer is generally better.

Thanks for the quick reply. It just seems that if you ground them finer, you could cover alot more area, thus using less substrate. So finer is better? Would this affect future flushes being their wouldnt be as much substrate?..

the more substrate you use the more mushrooms you will produce. period. the finer you grind it the faster it will connect back together in casing form. if its large chunks (6-10 big pieces off 1 cake) there will be less surface area to spread from and teh points between chunks will be much more airy making the mycellia reach farther than they want to to reach their goal. so the only thing you gain by grinding is the ability for your particles to settle rather easily amongst themselves or straw or whatever else you use. but if you crumble fine enough it will be no problem at all and much easier and sterile. probably quicker in the long run cos you wont have to sterilize a blender; the bags are pretty sterile on the inside when brand new.
