OT's straw tek ?s

i have a few ?s about old timers tek. 1) is the straw used as a substrate or just a water supply. i ask this because i plan to use a fairly spent cake (ground up) as spawn. 2) if the straw is substrate, would it be better to use a more nutritious product like hay. 3) does it make a difference what straw is used. i think wheat straw is what is mostly discussed. has anybody tried similiar materials. Of particular interest to me is timothy hay sold for guinea pigs at wally world.

the straw is a substrate, though it's not really nutritious. Adding worm castings ups nutrition. It'll still work without.

Make sure you incubate straw properly. (80-84). Not the 'ideal' 86 cuz it gets warm inside the straw as the mycelium grows. Not cooler than 80 cuz the mycelium has to grow fast in order to outgrow contams.

Straw is more nutritious than hay any day.
