stupid newb question

I've read the teks and shit, I must just be stupid, but I don't understand the dunking process. After you birth a cake, you drop it in water for 24 hrs then roll it in verm? I thought the mycelium wasn't supposed to get that wet. Sorry, this is my first grow. I'm planning on birthing my jars (brf/verm/water mix) and breaking them up and casing them, and casing them with 50/50 peat/verm top layer. Under the casing will be the pearlite for humidity, and a layer of verm on top, then the myc. I'll have to post some pics soon .. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'd lose the perlite :thumbup:

While you don't want standing water on your mycelium , a dunk doesn't hurt them . 12-24 hours should do the trick.

If I lose the perlite, how am I going to get humidity? My terrarium is what used to be a lizard cage. It's round, and small, but not too small. I've already tested the humidity and it's about 85-90% consistantly and the temperature is around 70-75 degrees. By the way, there is a plastic wall with slits in it blocking the perlite from sitting directly ontop of the casing, so it doesn't get too much water.

But anyway.. I just dunk my cakes in water for 12-24 hours then roll them in verm and break them up and case them?

leave the pearlite in your terrarium, i think hippie chick thought that you were putting it inside your casing container.

I would put about an inch of fairly well drained pearlite on the bottom of your terrarium, and your casings in their respected containers on top of the pearlite. I would put plastic syran wrap (preferably cus you can see through it) or tin foil over the casing until the mycellium is just popping through the layer. then i would remove the plastic wrap and reduce humidity by fanning often and maybe even take out a little bit of pearlite... say about 1/8 of an inch.

as for dunking... after you've scraped the dry vermiculite off the tops of the cakes (if you did that when you sterilized the jars and brf/verm), and tap the cakes loose. then i take spring water that comes in gallon jugs and fill the jars until they are full of water. the cake will most likely float, this is okay. then put tin foil or some kind of covering over the jar, and let it stay there for 12-24 hours. usually i do it for at least 18hrs and it works all the time.

what dunking does is simply maximize water retention in the vermiculite. remember before when you added a specific amount of water in your mixture of water/brf/verm? that was only for optimal mycellium growing conditions... now you want your verm to have as much water retained as possible because mushrooms are made up of roughly 90% wet weight. thus, more water = more and/or bigger mushrooms on average because more water is immediately available to them through the mycellium network that has colonized the high water qty vermiculite and brf.

hope this helped clear up some foggy perceptions on the topic.

hippiechick i think i remember you.... i remember back a few months ago i spent a lot of time in this forum to help people out, and i think i remember trying to help figure out a casing problem you were having with overlay of the mycellium... you were growing in real small containers i think...

and i think i remember us both helping peopple out before too, tell me if anything rings a bell  :hook:

I use 16 quart bulk containers . Not really that small.
