caps more potent then stems?
    #4934493 -

I bought and 8th of shrooms, and its all caps, no stems. I am wondering if caps are more potent then stems, should I maybe take it easy with these?

Aboslutely ZERO difference...

stems are a little less raunchy tasting, IMO, but no potency difference..

aDoS, our sincere apologies that the search engine is down tonight.

Whats this!? No... it isn't down at all. In fact it seems perfectly functional.

Do a search, hundreds and hundreds of posts show up. Heres one from 2001. Are you from 2001? Then what are you doing posting this?

(Though people did spew a lot of other misinformation back then, there are a million other posts on the subject)

Caps and stems are both worthless. You have to eat the goldish specs at the base of the mushrooms in order to feel anything. Don't listen to these retards.

(edit: no specs = no good. Throw them out.)

Wow, I hope not. I realize it isn't OTD, but these things pop up every night. We had multiple dried mushroom ID requests tonight. They could've at least read the forum, the others never left the front page. At worst they could've added to the existing topics.

Caps/Stems comes up pretty often. Is there not a faq and search engine though? How to preserve mushrooms comes up often. Also how to store blotter/syringes/whatever. These extreme examples are sort of a no man's land in my head, somehow. I realize that might be wrong, and I try to keep my responses friendly/funny. But man... it was disrespectful in the first place to not search.

Google "caps stems potency". No quotes. Do it *right now*, you'll see. This is the vaguest possible set of words you could search. The first two results are shroomery links. Does this give you any indication of what I'm trying to express?

Actually, if you look at the available data where caps and stems were tested separately, you find out that the caps are on average more potent than stems.

In "Morphological and chemical analysis of magic mushrooms in Japan" they tested 6 P. cubensis specimens caps and stems separately and the caps were 30% more potent than stems.

Also in "Garz: Variation der Indolalkaloide in Psilocybe cubensis durch unterschiedliche Kultivierungsbedingungen" he found that the caps are on average more potent.

From
Morphological and chemical analysis of magic mushrooms in Japan

..... The psilocin/psilocybin contents in P. cubensis were in the range of 0.17?0.78%/0.44?1.35% in the cap and 0.09?0.30%/0.05?1.27% in the stem. Hallucinogenic alkaloids (psilocin and psilocybin) have a tendency to be contained in the cap more than the stem. Our results are in agreement with the findings of Wurst et al. [8] who found lower concentrations of psilocybin in the stem than in the cap of the hallucinogenic fungus, Psilocybe bohemica. P. cubensis samples also had a tendency to contain larger amounts of psilocybin than psilocin. This tendency is consistent with results reported by Bigwood and Beug [4]......

I took the data from the above study and proecessed it, it shows that in the above study, the caps are 30% more potent than stems.

Thanks for the post Anno.

Now things get interesting. It depends on how you define potency. I'm assuming (and PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong) that most of the effect comes from psilocin, not psilocybin. Otherwise, why would copelandia, which has less psilocybin but more psilocin than cubensis, be stronger than cubes?

The results suggest that cubes have *twice* as much psilocin in the caps vs. stems (0.322% vs. 0.163%).

Note: percents are all % of dry mass.

> I'm assuming (and PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong) that most of the effect comes from psilocin, not psilocybin.

Not exactly.
Psilocybin is converted to psilocin in the body, and psilocin is the active substance.
You need 1.4 grams psilocybin to get 1 g of psilocin. This has been taken into account in the above calculations.

>The results suggest that cubes have *twice* as much psilocin in the caps vs. stems (0.322% vs. 0.163%).

Not quite. You have to take into account that with one mushroom the cap doesn't weigh exactly as much as a stem.
If you do this, then you find out that there is 75.4% more psilocybin in the caps but only 18.9% psilocin. If you combine those 2 results and consider the relative mass of the stems and caps and that psilocybin is less potent than psilocin you get the final result that the caps are 31% more potent than stems in this study.

Okay, thanks. (Incidentally, this doesn't seem to be the value I get by experimenting with the shroomery dosage calculator, but that's a different issue.)

Right. I mean 1g dry stems vs. 1g dry caps, although my sentence above is ambiguous. The average % psilocin values (not counting psilocin from psilocybin) are 0.322% and 0.163%. Those are just the averages of the first six rows of the first two columns of numbers.

BTW, unless I'm mistaken your table has a typo in Row 6--the 0.141 value should be 0.11. As this has negligible effect on calculations, I'm mentioning it mainly in case you didn't know you could cut-and-paste from Acrobat--I just learned this recently.

You do, actually.

Enter the value of 14 in "milligrams of psilocybin per gram of" and 0 in "milligrams of psilocin per gram of".
This equals the value of "0" in "milligrams of psilocybin per gram of" and 10 in "milligrams of psilocin per gram of".

Factor 1.4.
