Hey, good question. Often the words ?hay? and ?straw? are used interchangeably. But hay and straw aren?t the same thing. If you?re a farmer, a horse or a cow, the difference is especially important.

To explain: Hay is made out of grasses and legumes (plants like clover and alfalfa). Farmers grow these plants in fields; cut the plants down a couple times a summer; dry them out; then roll, wrap or cram them into bales. (Imagine mowing a really tall lawn then rolling the clippings into a really big Ding Dong.) Hay is full of nutrients, and farmers feed it to their livestock.

Straw, on the other hand, is made of the leftover stalks of plants like oats and wheat and barley. The hollow stalks are left behind when the seeds of the plants are harvested. The stalks are cut and dried and baled. The result, voila, is straw. Straw has fewer nutrients than hay but is light and warm and absorbent. It?s best for livestock bedding, not food. -from google

i was confused by this at a time. i could be wrong about the names assigned to the various products, but my understanding is that wheat straw is what you want. well whatever it's called its the big, rectangle, typical halloween decoration, bales. this is one product that i know works and like i said i think it's called wheat straw. it's a yellow color and has hollow stalks.

while this product is the only one i've ever used i'd be willing to bet that it really doesn't fuckin matter. probably many different but similiar products work.

hope that clears things up a bit.

Oh, but it does...

Hay is the staulk and the grains of grasses, where as straw is the hollow staulk of wheat, oat, barley etc...Look this up in the Shroomery glossary if you'd like to...

Hay shouldn't be used as the grains could possibly germinate, the grain in the hay makes it harder to pasteurize without bursting of the grains and starch being produced/coming out, and is more prone to contamination.

Just my 3 cents (yes I meant to say 3)

WHEAT..........WHEAT STRAW BALE (after seed grain is harvested)

Hay type tall grass........HAY BALE
Note small seeds on grass stalks.

Hay is about any sort of tall grass, stalks, seeds & all.

Hay often has all differing sorts of very very tiny to small (millet sized)seeds in it. Those seeds carry endospores (internally)of all differing sorts (including contaminate spores).

So if you use hay, there is a chance you might end up with a 1, 3, 5, 19, 78, 96, 276 (or who knows how many) of those tiny seeds in your substrate.

For spawn or substrate use, all grain/wbs and or grass seeds require sterilization - to KILL endospores they contain.

If any such seeds are in your substrate (assuming you do not sterilize your substrate). When you hydrate, spawn & incubate the HAY. The spores (including bad blue, mean green & wispy cobweb)in the seeds will also germinate.

The result will be however many contaminate points sprouting out in your substrate like 6 different colors of bird shit spattered all over a windshield  :mad2:

Because straw allows myc pathways for faster colonization. This isn't always necassary with Horse poo as it's digested half-ass compared to a cow and contains straw already...

Never a bad idea anyway though as long as done in complete sterility

Unless wheat straw is bio-degraded....one way or another.

It has a couple BIG problems.

One, it has a WAXY coating to protect the stalk.
Wax isn't nutritious & myc doesn't like it.

Two, dry straw doesn't absorb water well (waxy).

Three, chopping straw IS A BITCH.

Four, there are far better substrates.
