Straw or what else with wormcastings
    #2395211 -

Hi, Ivan is going through verm too fast. He was walking around when he found a bunch of straw on the ground. The straw has been there for awhile, and he is skeptic on using it. Would he be all right if he did go ahead and used it? Should he wash it before he pasteurizes it?

thanks a bunch
T.S.

well instead of using poo + verm, im going to use poo + straw. Wouldn't the straw be taking the verms job over, holding moisture?

Ivan was checking out the straw when he noticed rot under the top layer. He wants to try something to mix with the worm castings.

What else works well with worm castings?

thx

I was about to go find a feed store and buy some straw, then I noticed my neighbor has 2 bails of hay on the side of his drive way. HAHA Got lucky. I noticed in my search that corncob works well to. Maybe give that a try once i run out of straw.

Hay is not straw, plain wheat straw works very well as a bulk substrait, just pasturize and spawn.

YES!!!!! So, a bail of hay starts out as hay and once it dries out it's straw?

Or bails of hay is grass and other junk, while straw is stalks of wheat?

im confused because everyone calls them bails of hay. You country boys need to straighten me out!

Should Ivan rinse off the STRAW before he uses it? Its been sitting outside since October.

It needs to be pasturized first. put it in a big pot of water and khold the temp between 160-180 for an hour. than spawn it.

And as far as straw verses hay. Straw is used for animal bedding not food. Hay is food. There is many kinds of straw, wheat, oat, barley ie..
I use Wheat straw. ive heard it works the best so never tryed anything else. if it aint broke dont fix it. I can get bails of wheat straw from the farm down the street for 5 bucks a full size bail.

a lot of people (non-mushroom growers that is) mistakenly refer to straw as hay. the golden, resilient stuff is straw. the wimpy green stuff is hay.

straw:

hay:
