what should i do with my compost
    #489885 - 12/13/01 01:27 PM (22 years, 2 months ago)

I gots some compost from Dr. BT. I was wondering about the best way i could use it. Should i use it as a casing layer, or let mycelium colonize it more completely?

also, I got some PF strain going in rye jars, and I was thinking about shaking them, but i killed off some Pan Cyan by shaking. someone please re-assure me that it is ok to do some shaking.

Larry, it's OK to shake...just not too hard.

I would spawn the compost, not case with it. Compost is usually considered a bulk substrate and not a casing.

You can't shake spawn too hard. Don't shake daily, but every few days will be fine. If shaking "kills off" spawn, then the spawn was contaminated with bacteria. Shaking gives the bacteria the few hours oportunity it needs to take over. If you loose a jar to shaking, then you would have lost it during bulk spawning or casing anyway. Therefore it's always a good idea to test spawn by shaking, and letting it recover for a day before using. Then you know if it's clean or not.

And let us know how that compost works, I've heard conflicting things....

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.

i don't know,
I have looked all over the jars with a mag lens and see no contamination or mold of any kind.
but maybe your right.

I'de say full out spawn that bad boy. You'll get better results. That is if nothings contamed, then either way your screwed. I'm doing the same with some acadian coast and dimitri's compost. We'll see how it goes. I have a casing of the same for a comparison.

I would normally say no, a casing layer is not needed with compost, but if you feel so inclined, then a thin casing layer should suffice, or if you begin experiencing overlay.

most likely contamed with bacteria, not mold. Should look a little wet/greasy and smell like apples usually. There won't be the signature color of a mold contam.

Casing compost or not depends on your setup. If it has minimal air exchange capabilities, low air to bed ratios and maintains a high humidity then you can get away fine with no casing. For a larger setup with proper air exchange, air to bed ratios and lower (85%) humidities then it's a toss up. A casing would be recomended if you want lotsa flushes, but you should still be able to get two or three without one.

I think I can see a certain wetness/greasness in some of them that is not there in others. Perhaps a smell is in order.

cubensis mycelium is tough. It doesn't just die. It usually either loses a battle for space, or gets eaten by a contam.

Once you can see it, if it disappears, you can count on one of these things:

A contamination ate the mycelium
A contamination took over the substrate
Temperature killed the mycelium
A chemical (lysol, bleach etc) killed the mycelium
The mycelium ran out of water

In an oversimplified statement, that's all that can go wrong.
Shaking, light, sound even scarry faces, really scarry faces can only dream of hurting the almighty mycelium. Hell, mycelium can be blended and still recover.
