Cropping surface is measured in square feet. The volume of substrate that makes up the casing within those square feet is measured in cubic feet!!!

Was just wondering if the increased yields within a given square foot was simply related to the increased volume of substrate that makes up the square feet of cropping surface, or if it was RELATED to straw versus manure!!!

Anno answered that the SIZE of his pans are increased with the Straw as opposed to manure. I still have yet to see any supersized Pans grown on any substrate. SOME strains of Pans produce large fruits on manure, but I guess these will be even larger on Straw compared to manure.

I find it easier to work with manure in volume then straw due to contamination resulting from the latter at an increased rate to manure. Maybe trying a different spawn substrate(millet as opposed to rye) and sterilizing straw in bags to incubate, instead of rubbermaids will increase my chances of succes.

Would love to increase the size of the cambodian strain of cyans and the "tropicalis" strain, because they produce SERIOUS pin sets compared to the rest of the Strains/species of potent pans!! The majority of the other strains produce nice caps on manure!!!

Thanks all.

Sorry this went off topic, to reinforce the point of the original thread topic. Composted products produced for plants are NOT the best substrate for mushroom growing.

Wow...I didn't realize this thread would develop so well.

Thanks for all the input folks...I'll hopefully have a successful first attempt at these critters.   Now I have a question for anyone who grows this strain:  from the pictures I've seen...do these shrooms not have a veil?  Also, when is the optimal time to harvest them for both consumption and for prints?

As always, thank you in advance for any advice!

Love & Light,

Bop

No veil,,,Before they are fully flat,,my trops always drop some heavy loads and if they are not cut in time they darken all the caps in the terrium....

By the way I am running a gang valve and two lines in half the day air is pushed thru the water/h2o2/perlite..The other half the day the valve is closed and the other open to push fresh air(thru a new in line filter of course) and hold 70 to 80% humidity....Just some info...

pancyans dont have a veil, wait till the caps are near plane & starting to lighten in color before harvest, this is usually around a week after pinning, depending on temps, etc.

that's interesting. you finely grind the straw - how? blender? - and sterlize in jar with pc? then multispore inoculation? then?

The trick with the trash can is dont put more than eight inches of straw in the bottom..If you do it will bog down the weed wacker and not spin in the can right,,If you have it right you will have it spinning well and the string slamming the bottom but cutting the straw and making it swirl cutting every pass..There is very minimal loss over the sides if the right amount is used...I already figured out the learning curve guys.....

thank you, bluejay. 3gs dry per jar is quite respectable yield for pan cyans. as you say, they are pan cyans!
