Straw isn't hard to use. The most important thing is to pasteurize it correctly: 30 min to 45 min at a temperature of 70 C to 75 C (160 F to 170 F). Don't use higher temperatures or the straw will contaminate easily.
I find the crops from straw to be plentyfull and to have nice big mushrooms.

Could somebody please elaborate as to how to properly pasterize straw? I have done some searches on this subject and cant really find any instructions that make sence.

Please disregaurd my last post. I finaly found the tek. And damm do I feel stupid. I really thought that there was more to the tek than pouring 175 degree water over a bag of straw and then letting it drip dry. Shesh.

I've heard a good way to prepare straw is to soak it for 12 hours, letting all the material absorb water, then freeze it for a day or so. This helps break down the cellular structure some allowing mycellium to eat it up more easily. Of course you still need to thaw and pasturize it afterward.

I have found straw to be a great bulk tek.
I take an old pillow case and fill it with wheat straw (purchased from a feed store for $4.00 per bail)
pasturize it in a large cooking pot for 1 hour or so on low boil
then allow it to cool in an inert environment. When it is cool I put a small layer of the freshly pasturized straw on the bottom of poly-bag (size may very) and use a sliced up PF cake as spawn.
So far results have been pretty good. If you really pay attention to the pasturization process you could have pretty good results too.
I followed this tek using Treasure Coast cakes and ended up with 42 dry grams.
However I would love to hear of a good way to case this huge brick of mycellium in order to extend its life time.

I have seen straw tecks used before, but the pasterilized straw was purchased from JLF and was already pasterized.
It sounds like the trick is not to over cook the shit.

PsiloCyber, another question
the page says that a PC is best to cure the straw.
Does that mean it's better to STERILIZE the straw? otherwise, whats the point of it here?
also, i dont yet have any worm castings and in the end of the Tek page, it mentions that one can use Water Bath Pasteurized manure. would the procedure be the same in preparing the spawn for the straw? that is colonizing the manure instead of worm castings and then mixing that with the pasteurized straw.
or do u think it may work by mixing up the whole thing: straw, manure and spawn on seeds and tossing that in the 20 gallon tub to colonize and fruit in its own time?
cause that would be like combining 2 great teks into one ;)
