How much straw can you fit in a microwave? None because straw will melt in the microwave and it dosen't fit anyways. Yes use a pot and a thermometer you lazy ass.

Straw will melt in the microwave and turn into straw gel. It happens all the time! Put the pot on your head and shove the thermomiter up your ass. Make sure you stuff your mouth full of straw and sit on your stove, or have a friend shove you in the oven.

microwaves cannot guarantee a 150-160 deg pasturization temp. working in a pot of water gives you that advantage if you have a thermometer. It will payoff so much to invest in a pot or even a small steel horse troft to throw on your oven and if you make it that far then spend an extra $3 at walmart and buy a laundry bag to put the straw in....it will make things much easier to work with.....the "sweater" laundry bag will hold enough straw for what ever container you are using.....unless it's a kiddie pool....good luck

Doesnt boiling the straw leech out alot of vitamins and whatnot
that could be retained by baking it? (at 160-->170)

Look you don't boil it... that spells failure and contams. Allthough I have carelessly let almost all of my batches boil for a short while and they usually turn out fine. You heat it in water that is 160-180 F. Now how much straw do you think can it in an oven None because none can fit in a microwave oven and they are both ovens so therefore none can fit in the oven. Now as for straw in the oven even if it did fi it would melt and leave you with straw pancakes (crepes (you know htose puny little super htin pancakes)) I hate those damn crepes the french think they are soo cool because they can heat straw and melt it to make crepes. Well melting straw is not only uncool but it is also mycologically unsound. And if you were to bake the straw you wouldn't be supplying any moisture to it which is what pastuerizing does. Now if you were super layzy you could put a pot w/straw like normal people put ontop of the stove in the oven but that would be silly and pots arent designed to be heated like that, they are designed to be heated from the bottom. Look you need to wet the straw and you need to pastuerize it. Heating water isn't that big of a deal so just heat it on the stove top. You could use a bunhc of baking tins to bake the straw in water but how much straw can you fit in a baking tin as opposed to a laundry bag? And a laundry bag is alot easier to deal w/.

Thanks for the infos tom. I live with my dad currently and I guess
straw isnt the best way to go for the mini easily concealable portable
stealth type operation that ive got in mind but ill file this in my brain
for later use. I have one question, how small do you usually cut up
the straw? Like could one(after pasteurization) cut it up so small that
it would lay more homogenously and take up less space?

This isn't an ADVANCED question either but i'll answer it since some people obviously don't know that the shroomery has a SEARCH feature.....

PASTURIZING STRAW

1. boil water 170-180 degrees
2. put straw in porous sack
3. put straw either in another pot or a bucket
4. pour boiling water over straw
5. let cool
6. drip dry to desired moisture (moist not dripping wet)
7. say hi to your newly pasturized straw

this is how PASTURIZATION works
this will work for :

1. shit
2. straw
3. verm
4. perilite
5. worm poo
6. and other casing ingredients that need to be pasturized

now please FOR the LOVE of GOD!!!!!!!!!! READ!

Thanks BP; im familiar with those steps. I am asking you
experienced folks if the straw can be sliced like crazy so that none
of the peices are more than 1/4 --> 1/2 inch in length
to make it more compact and homogenous since the space
id be using would only be a few inches by a few inches; or
if cutting it up that small will invite more contams or make it
impossible to colonize or something? THANKS ;-)=D

for real man.. whats with all these people.. does it never occur to them that if they click the search button itll let them search through all the messages? like half of the questions asked on the shroomery are all questions that have been answered and the answers could be found just from searching... actually i take that back.. its more like 70 percent of the questions...

But think about it...
if 99% of the questions asked have already been answered, and people were to use the search feature instead of asking, this would become more like a library instead of a community.

But i think its worthwhile to keep bringing up these questions whether they have been asked or not.
