Pasteurize This!
    #1070348 - 11/20/02 04:16 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

The neighborhood armadillo wanted to post his plans for a small steam unit. The capacity is approx. 5gals. Depending on ambient temperature, proper temp is acheived in 60-90 minutes. Preheating the chamber with hot tap water is said to assist the preheating. There is a piece of convex hardware cloth in the bottom of the cooler to allow an open area for steam circulation.. He drilled an 11/52 hole in the lid to hold a roasting thermometer.

Vick's Vaporizer
Plastic funnel
1/2 ID Garden Hose
48Qt. Ice Chest.
Roasting Thermometer
Hose Clamp to connect funnel and hose.
Electrician's Tape to connect funnel and vaporizer.
Hardware Cloth for inside the cooler
Slip-On pipe insulation fo rgarden hose
Cinder blocks to raise ice chest. -Trailerpark Tek!
(not all items shown in diagram).

It's an adaptation of the Harris composter. This will pastuerize and make compost.

Hahahah, hell yeah!!! I was in Wal-Mart the other day, happened to notice a vaporizer. I thought to myself, "Hmmmm, now i could sure think of a couple of uses for this dandy apparatus!!!" so how do these things work, obviously they put out steam, but, is the steam going to be hot enough (160 degrees) to achieve proper pasteurization?? This would be much much easier than pasteurizing in a pot on top of the stove!!!

Ok, I've read that mycotopia tek before, and I noticed it says composting takes 6 or 7 days. So if u use this to pasteruize, it wouldn't take 6 or 7 days would it??

Bottom of the link:
In reply to:

Some species of mushrooms culture well on ordinary pasteurized straw with no additions. This composter is ideal to pasteurize straw. It is much simpler and more accurate than immersion in hot water or other methods. Just load with shredded dried straw and pasteurize at greater than 60C for 4 to 6 hours. Allow to cool slowly covered, and spawn when the temperature is less than 28C. Typically the straw will be at proper moisture content when unloaded.

Not sure about the time period, seems long compared to the 1 hour that is recommened for pasterization on a stove, but in order to properly hydrate the straw, you may need that long.

Seems like a really good idea, giving me ideas of my own.

Steam is always 200+F degress.. The 'dillo says the outlet temp from the hose is 180-210F. You could wire a dimmer swtch into it for another $10.

Good lord man-it's a steamer, a funnel, hose, a clamp and some tape.
And a bitching Paint diagram from a chinese-eyed armadillo-what more could you possibly need?

So this could definitely be used as a semi-bulk pasteruizing unit for dung???

Absolutely. The 'dillo suggests adding water tio the poo first. Use a garden sprayer, or a kitchen colander. I guess you might be able to leave the poo in the ice chest when you preheat it. But that would be heavier and messier.

For a bigger batch, they rent wallpaper steamers at Casa dePot for $20 a day. A clean 50 gal metal drum would run about $10-20.
