PanSubbs and winter varieties
    #471460 -

Just a couple of questions.

1. How long in the south eastern US (SC, Georgia border) are Pan Subbs in season? We have been getting a lot of rain and warm temps. I have found Pan Subbs before during the summer, any chance now?

2. Are there any winter varieties that grow during November/December/January months in the southeast? Maybe some type of Gymnopilus?

Pan subs went out of season in about october or so this year.
As far as winter species go, yeah some types of Gymnospilus.

Peace,
-Gumby

Yep, them subbs turned off like a light bulb around early october here this year, didn't they gumby. I have never seen a species just up and quit fruiting like they did. Usually a species will slow down and eventually you'll only find a few scarce fruits here and there and then they disappear, some patches will fruit longer than others. Those subbs stopped fruiting over night in every patch I had, and there was no major change in temp or anything.

Anyways, during the winter in your area you best bet would indeed be Gymnopilus species, they will probably fruit a few more times this year with the warm temps and recent rain here in the southeast.

Yeah, my patch in the back yard was spitting out about 7 shrooms a day, then it just quit after a period where we had no rain for like 2 weeks(it rained on your side of town =\), then once it rained... no more shrooms.

Looks like its going to storm on Thrusday :) I'm looking forward to finding my first Gyms.

Peace out,
-Gumby

I have a sure fire Gym spot that the atlantis discoverer shared with me, lots of big laughing gyms, its down off holcomb bridge though, a bit of a haul from your place. Soon as I find some I'll let you know, if you get a chance to come picking you know your more than welcome to join me :)

Man, did you see the fog this morning? I was out deer hunting and the woods were soaked, leaves dripping wet and puddled the fog was so thick. Definitely going to be some type of mushrooms fruiting this weekend, possibly one last weilii fruiting.

Could you post some Gymnopilus pics LK? What are the best places to look? Weilii's are still fruiting, where should I keep an eye out for them?

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner Ncubensis. I only check in every once and a while when mushroom season is over. Like gumby said in another post, everything magic here has been done fruiting since late october, except a few scarce cubies. I'm not familar with the griffin area so I can't really help. If it was summer I'd give you directions to a promising cubie field not too far from you, and I'd love to take you weilii picking, but those have been done since october as well. Only advice I can give you is look on fallen harwoods, their stumps, and hardwood mulch for gymnopilus species, even those seem to be done for the year, but there might be a few fluke clusters out there still.

Take care, and don't hesitate to get in touch when your in the area next season, I'd love to take you out picking, always looking for a buddy to trudge through the fields with me :)

LK,
