My friend from Australia always talks about the "blue meanies" and "gold tops". I think they are strains of cubensis. I'm also pretty sure that he is from that area, and he has definitely gone picking before. He is sleeping right now, but when he gets up I'll ask him about picking mushrooms in New South Wales. I'll post back when I talk to him.

Hey Evil smurf.
there are two main psilocybe species in northern N.S.W. Ones refered to as gold tops are cubensis and the others are blue meanies or copelandia cyanescens. If you are new stick to picking cubensis only. Compare them to the many photos that have been posted on this site. Many of my old posts from a month or two ago had some photos of meanies and goldies They are much easier to ID. They both grow in cow dung or grass that is heavily manured after the rains. There are many paddocks in Northern NSW take your pick. I do not think the rain forests here have any psilocybe shrooms. I have seen many types of mushies in the nat parks but none turned blue. Now I do not bother because the two types mentioned are plenty. This is my first year picking here but have been told they will fruit all year long. The problem is as you know is the winters can be dry and litle rain. This unusually cold weather probably will slow them down as well. Burrr! I live in southern QLD. I will post any finds the same day but have not been out because of the drought. I have found when there is a lot of sunny days between rains it takes a few days of showers to get them going. Did you go to blues fest in Byron. I blew it . There were some good bands.

Hi, while Copelandia species are normally referred to as blue meanies, and Gold caps are P. cubensis,

In Hawaii, the Copelandia cambodgeniensis are always referred to as Gold Caps and gold tops as see in the image posted below.

Also in Florida and the Southest USA many collectors of Psilocybe cubensis refer tot that species as gold tops or gold caps among other names.

Hey Evilsmurf
check my post on may 8. Hardly a small find all in one spot. Those were posted the day they were found. If you gave up in Feb you may have missed some good trips. I said this is my first year and started late in the summer. I have had some great finds though. If you say that is off season, I cannot wait til it is on! I will keep checking even if it is not the "right season". Are you north of the Clarence? Or is that too personal?
I also would like to know a about other types of non dung loving mushies from the rainforest or else where that may be worth while for the brain. So far I cannot find anything on them. Will let you know if I find and you do the same

Psilocybe subaeruginosa,I think this is the species that I hunt (I'm not too sure on the name but after watching a video called the mushrooms of baLinup the name rings a bell) for in North Central Victoria . The area is a forest on a mountain top. Like I've said before, they have a brown cap, with the
?nipple? on the top, a thin white stem, and purple brown spore powder, they stain blue after being squashed a bit. It takes about 10 of them frest to get visuals, about 4-5 to get affects. I'm curious to know if this is the same species that has been mentioned? These are the only shrooms that I feel confident in identifying, the only problem is that they are winter shrooms, so most the year is fast.
