AMD A64 3800+ X2 Dual Core.

No matter what you're doing, things are smooth. I'm encoding a divx, folding, running prime95 on max torture test, and still everything is responsive and quick.

Two is better than one. This is easily the best upgrade I've ever done. If you're shopping for a new computer, do not even think of overlooking this processor. Its perfect.

Overclocks like a mother fucker, too. :smile:

Hmmm... CISC... MMX... Little Endian... perfect? Perhaps really good for an x86 based chip, but far from perfect in the big picture. (I do like the chip, but I don't care for the Intel x86 architecture in general.)

I'm going with an X2 when I upgrade next, probably a 4200+ or higher. Won't be for at least half a year though.

I'm about to buy one of these chips. I'm deciding between the 3800 and the 4200. I don't do any gaming, but I want the cpu to last me a good 4 years+. Does anyone have an opinion on whether an extra 0.2 ghz is worth $80?

Just buy the cheaper one and overclock it 200MHz and save the money. You won't notice the difference either way if your not gaming or benchmarking.

I currently have mine sitting at what would roughly be an A64 5000+ x2's speed, if they existed. :smile:

Stock heatsink that came with it.
Voltage ^0.1
idle temp ^5c
load temp ^20c
rock solid after one day in memtest, and running prime95 constantly since windows was installed. These things overclock very nicely. :smile:

Overclocking is when you make your CPU run at a higher speed than it comes stock. I can't really explain the exact details of how it works, but doing it is pretty simple.

The two things that control your CPU speed are the multiplier and FSB (Front Side Bus).

I'm not sure exactly how the multiplier works but it times (multiplied) by the fsb = your CPU speed. Correct me if I'm wrong but FSB is the speed of data transfer between your CPU and RAM.

To overclock you need to go inot your bios and increase the FSB and or multiplier(if you can change the multiplier, alot of CPU's have it locked) gradually.

Overclocking is safe to do if you know your limits and watch your CPU temps by stress testing.

Most processor families are identicle. Say there are 3000,3200,3500,3800,4000 speed processors for sale, most often they're all exactly same in architecture. They simply test them and say "this one is stable as this" and label it whatever. Then they put lock on it to that speed. You can overcome this lock in various ways, the result is you end up with a much faster processor. This is an overly simplified explanation. If you're thinking about getting into this.. keep in mind, its not for the meek. Its for the geeks.. and you CAN burn stuff out. :wink:

CPU: 3800+ x2 running [Email]300mhzx8.5@1.475v[/Email] (2550mhz)
RAM: Dual Channel Samsung sticks 1024mb running [Email]200mhz@2-2-3-7[/Email] on 2/3rd mem divider
HDD: Dual 200gb Maxtor DiamondMax 10 16mb
VID: 8 meg pci ATI rage II+ ;D
MOB: DFI LanParty NF4 Ultra (I'm no laner, but this motherboard is sweeter than beeshit.)

Really, all I need now is a PCI-E videocard.. (This motherboard has done away with AGP) it burns that I have a radeon 9600 XT sitting here that I can't use anymore, since its agp. ;P

Right now, the best single core processor to buy is the s939 OPTERON 144 with CABNE stepping. 1mb cache, overclocks better than early a64 venice 939's (think 3.0GHZ on stock HSF, NOT 3000+ but truly 3GHZ) and goes for 150$ usd.. assuming you can find anywhere with them in stock. :smile:

Or clock scew exceeds the critical path length of whatever is executing and the chip crashes.

If you don't know how to overclock, maybe. Running memtest and prime95 constantly while testing. finding the limit where a single error occurs and then backing down 10% ensures a nice clean overclock. :smile: I'll let you know the first time this system crashes.

Don't forget that overclocking will increase the temp. So make sure you get another fan or something to keep it kool, otherwise your CPU will fucking fry. Same with the vid card, if you overclock that bitch and don't do anything to keep it kool. that bitch will fry like an omlette.

Arctic silver does the job even with the stock heatsink. I have my 3000+ clocked 400MHz higher and my max temps only raised about 3-4 degrees and thats when I'm stress testing which works the cpu heats up the cpu alot more than any game or program ever would.
