just out of curiosity, why would the Intel i3-3220 be a down grade if you were doing coding or video editing? I know people that have pentium 4 intel core 2 duos that run linux and do video editing and coding and they never complain.
I imagine an upgrade to a quad core would be a smart decision if you planned to be doing all that at once, and using the internet as well. It's all about how many processes are running. I wouldn't run auto cad and a few other programs with an older processor either, and the boot time with an older process will obviously be slower, but I'm still surprised at that statement about "quad core." As far as I know, the quality of the cache and speed of the processor is based on cycles and architecture of each core, how much memory can fit and how quickly it can be passed off to other sectors of hardware. Of course you mentioned this when comparing an Intel processor to an Amd quad core.
I guess this gets a bit complicated, as what you are really measuring is instructions per second, a million instructions per second by today's standards is slow, so it's hard to sit her all day measuring how this works I suppose simpler factors such as how many cores and cycles aren't as complicated as actually showing a chart like this:

I myself am amazed at how small the dual core processor in my phone is and yet how fast my phone can be, although that is probably nothing in comparison to how fast my computer would be if I over clocked it from 2.8 ghz to 5.6 ghz successfully without frying anything, yet power consumption and heat measurements to me are a much better standard then how many cores in a processor. All this and I haven't even mentioned read and write speed of a drive and ram cache space but then with ddr3 and at least 4 gbs what's the point of diving into this
