Building a PC - help needed
    #1626488 -

I am trying to build a computer. I think I have it hooked up right but when I turn it on the monitor stays blank. Of course I do not have a OS installed yet (XP Pro is planned) I just want to be able to setup the bios, for now anyway.
the motherboard

I have a Athlon 2500 w/fan and a single PC2700 512 MB DDR DIMM installed.
do I need to have two DIMM's to make it boot?

There are only four jumpers and I have checked them many times as well as on the harddrive. I am stumped

Thanks for any help

onboard video?

where'd you buy it?

bad motherboards are common, in my experience. I've had to return 5/20

The DIMM in should be in the slot closest to the CPU, also. But you do not need to have 2.

If it is a bad board I am out of luck cause they make you send in the UPC code for the rebate and require the same code for returns/exchanges. damn

One other bit of information. I hear one beep when I power it on.

Try a different video card in your motherboard. Or try your card in another computer.

Are you sure the monitor is good?

A beep is normal.

Even with no operating system you should still see the boot-up and bios info.

First thing I tried was a Nvidia 4x Geforece4 card. worked the same :frown:
so then I thought well maybe it has to have a floppy drive (didn't want one) So I got it and installed it today. no change.

The monitor works cause I use it with my laptop. At least until I get this working.

I do not have any machine to test parts on. I have this laptop here and the other desktop is not new enough to run these parts on.

I was really hoping this would be a do it yourself project. I was able to build one 10 years ago and I thought they were easier to work on now.

if you here a beat, it most vertainly is gonna be something else than the Board itself.
If you dont here much else its probably gonna be the cpu.Are the fans and L.E.Ds on?Did you have it in another pc before? Did it come mounted or did you put put it in yourself?
Maybe you should check your Bios Booklett to see what one beep means.
Usually the first thing that starts is the cpu, cause the bios cant do nothing without a processor. If your Grafiksboard is busted you would still here loads of beep. It cant be the PSU either, cause you heared the beep. The Beeps good you know!!

So: If its the CPU (most likely) check if there is a way of an exchange via the post. In Europe Ive been fine with this so far. If you live elsewhere, you might wanna check first. If you happen to have a friend with an athlon check if your bios supports it, and try it out!
If its the Grafikscard exchange it to check. It most likely wont be anything else.
If there?s still a prob I dunno what to do... (send back everything...)

I can take the processor (athlon 1500) out of the old computer and put it in. I will have to change the bus speed jumper only. I would hate to put a known working chip in and have it ruined by something messed up.

I cant do the same for the RAM though.

Are bad processors common?

The computer repair place wants $75 an hour to figure it out and fix it

a little am't of static electricity can fry processors. I wouldnt say its common but they're pretty fragile.

Thanks for your help everyone. As a last ditch attempt I took everything apart and back. I must have left something loose the first time cause now it is working. I am installing the OS now.
Thanks again   wooohooo!
