HELP!!! CPU, Motherboard or Power supply?
    #4745866 - 10/02/05 06:42 PM (11 years, 2 months ago)

So this morning i woke up, computer off, kinda odd, but i asked my gf and she was like "i dunno why it's off"... so i went to start it, and hit the button, and the power light came on for a split second, and nothing... kept hittin it... nothing... so i start trying a few things, changing the cord, checking the breaker on the power strip, etc... nothin.... eventualy i've got the thing open with all the drives unplugged and the cards removed... nothin... so every once in awhile, i would hit the switch (switched the reset/power switch to test those, not them) and it would start to spin the processor fan, and the power supply fan for a split second, then power down...

so eventualy, i've get unplugged the 4wire plug next to the processor
http://www.soyousa.com/images/products/8...9fa0b78a16c693d
seen slightly above to the right of the CPU slot
and then the power supply fan is on and running.. but nothing from the computer itself (just the main 2" long power plug into the motherboard plugged in) no beep, nuthin... so i went to my other computers, but they dont have one of those connectors on it, so i cant swap it out to try...

so i found a 12v test light and there is definetly voltage going to the 4 wires (2 black, 2 yellow) i tried to re-seat the processor and got nothing... and now i'm totaly out of ideas on what to test next.

side note: with only the 2" plug into the M/b, power supply fan works, then turned it offf, and plugged 4 wire in, and split second then off. Then, unplugged it, hit switch nothing untill i unplug the power supply from the main chord, hit the switch, plug it back in, and then hit the switch again and the power fan will work (if the 4wire is pluged in, it will do the split second/power down)

if anyeone knows what's up with this... please let me knwo, cause i got homework to do and it's gettin real old tryin to fix this..... Thanks

here's the M/b http://www.soyousa.com/products/proddesc.php?id=281

Do you get any beep codes when it runs without the larger cable?

Get a speaker connected if you havn't got one attached.

These beeps will possibly help you identify the problem

The beep codes most likely can be found in the manual

Tried re-seating the processor? Blow underneath where the pins are and the holes in the ZIF socket for the CPU

Could be a short on the motherboard, something linked the other Power connector

no beeps for anything (speaker is connected)

tried blowing all the crap out everywhere... no luck... but a lot of dust came out, but not around the processor, mostly from the bottom of the case where the dust bunnies breed.

Well i'd hazard a guess at your mother board passing on to electronic heaven... RIP

Have you tried operating the motherboard outside the case? Perhaps there's a short circuit on the metal case/cover (seen it a few times)

I bet if you check the caps on the board one or all of them are leaking. If its going on for a sec and turning off its probably your power supply. If you turn it on and it stays on but does nothing its probably your board.

well, the power supply (fan) will stay on as long as the 4 wire plug is not plugged into the board...

this has happened before a few times, where i would wake up and it would be off.. or sometimes the occasional power down when using it, and it would take about 10-15 hits on the power button and turn on.. it's happened maybe 3 times this last year

it's not really even turning on, the fan will start to spin, get maybe 1-2 bladeworth of movement (processor fan) and then nothing... just a squeek noise, like a power up sound (if htat makes any sence)

I'm with vamp on this one: do a GOOD check of all the capacitors on your motherboard. You might fine one or two that are bulging: the top of the can should be FLAT, if it isn't the cap is blown. If that's the case your best bet is to replace the motherboard.

It could be your power supply, but the fact that it stays on when you don't have the Aux power plugged in indicates a motherboard problem, to me.

If they're bulging it probably means they're dead or ready to die, whether they are leaking or not (they could actually have dried up, especially the ones near the CPU which are put under a lot of heat stress from the nearby CPU heatsink).

odd problem , make sure that the power supply is switched on 115V on the back , it will look like a little red slider on the back of the power supply ull prolly have to use ur nail to switch it
