Building a new PC... thoughts?

Well it's time to upgrade my aging 1 GHz system. I'm trying to stay at or under $1,500 and build something with balanced performance for games, apps, AV editing, compiling, etc. I've been out of the PC market for a while so I had to do some research to pick components. I was just wondering if anybody has experience with the parts I'm thinking of getting and can offer suggestions or advice.

I would buy the motherboard and processor last minute if possible! Prices on processors drop like crazy these days, and you want a motherboard to go with it.

I would also check out http://www.tomshardware.com/ for some of ht ebest bang for your buck.

I'd say forget the RAID, just get one big SATA hard drive, and spend the extra money on a high-end vid card (That 6600 just isn't in the same class with the rest of the system).

If you want some real speed go for a Raptor or Ultra320 drive for your main drive and an extra 250GB for space.

I was hoping to come into this thread with my four years PC building experience and tell you whats what, but that spec looks fantastic.

you might think about using a raptor as the OS drive, and then forgo raid striping. (a raptor is a small scsi-speed sata drive). for instance, a four-raptor raid striping set has been clocked to install windows XP in under ten minutes.

Also I would definitely not recommend using stock HSF that comes with your chip they are always crap, pick up something all copper.

The specs are great Ythan. Now it all depends if you do heavy AV editing. A Raid 0 SATA II is ok (although the technology is very recent, it's fast but more prone to early concept problems), but i don't know if a smaller 15000 rpm SCSI UltraWide HD and a SCSI controler wouldn't be best, probably not cheaper though ....

As for the graphics card goes, i wouldn't mind changing it to an ATI X800XL, i believe they are cheaper, made with a smaller manufacturing process, 16 pipelines and overclockeable as hell. Don't mind buying it if you go using linux, ATI drivers still suck .... yes mtippett, they still suck :rolleyes: ...

i have that exact case... i love the shit out of it..mine probably weighs over 50lbs after putting everything in it...it's thick, there's almost nowhere to cut yourself or your wires...high quality, all around. and the color can't be beat, imo. though it is a bit hard to work on after you get everything plugged in, even though it's so huge. the true430 is a good power supply too. and i agree that you should up the video card a bit...and i also agree that you should get an "after market" heat sink and fan, something all copper preferably...they usually only run you 25-50 more and are extremely worth it in the long run for cpu life (i've heard that dropping the temp 10C can double the life, though i'm not entirely sure it's true, there must be a little truth to lower temperature leading to longer life), especially since you're using arctic silver with it. otherwise these look like good choices.
