Can someone please explain something to me?

I have here what I believe is a relatively fast computer. Here the specs: processor: AMD Athlon™64 X2 Dual-Core Processor 5000+ 2.60GHz Memory: 1918MB generic OS: Windows Vista Home premium x86 HD: 300GB, 119GB available Mother board: NVIDIA GeForce 6150 GPU and NVIDIA nForce 430 MCP featuring HD video Internet speed: 1.5MB
My problem is that it Lags with games like half life 2 and CS:S. I'm told that thats the GPU, but can't aforrd a $600+ super card. Is there something else I can do to make games run faster?
It could also be a virus, I do DL a lot of "free" software. if this is the problem, what is the best virus scanner that will find every thing? I was told the the Microsoft scaners suck.
One other thing I really want to make this a dual boot and run some flavor of linux. What would be the best safest choice to run on this system?

Or it could be... drum roll please... "OS: Windows Vista Home premium x86". In my experience, Vista cuts the speed of the computer by 3 compared to XP. With Vista, your 2.6GHz processor is running (performance wise) just a bit faster than an old 800MHz PC. But, on the bright side, you are not supposed to be able to easily copy DRM protected content.

> What is DRM protected content?
DRM = digital rights management. Generic term that means "copy protected by the recording industry". Vista checks all the hardware on your system, 30 times a second, to ensure that nothing has been modified to allow people to "snag" decrypted media streams from digital media.
> Could I dual boot with XP?
Yep, though it can be painful finding drivers for newer hardware that also work with XP. Microsoft is using it's monopoly strength to force hardware vendors to release vista only drivers and preventing hardware vendors from releasing technical specifications that would allow opensource drivers to be written. Microsoft wouldn't want to have to fairly compete against opensource projects.

Is there any way to use this to my advantage or are they just fucking me 30 times a second? Fuck win I think I'll switch to either Ubuntu or RedHat

Nope.. purely a fuck us 30 times a second to ensure that we aren't making copies of digital media even though our right to backup digital media is protected by law.
> Fuck win I think I'll switch to either Ubuntu or RedHat
Win XP isn't too bad (though I would never admit it). I typically dual boot; WinXP on one partition and a free unix flavor on the other.

Personally, i think linux mint is the best thus far.
i got my laptop roarin with a vista premium.
after using it, i suddenly decided that apple may have cool points afterall...
in any case, i formatted my hard drive (160GB) and i dual boot linux mint as my main OS (130GB partition) with win XP (30GB partition).
and im only booting xp for games
and an unexpected bonus, all those resources the computer came with to run vista now become goldmines to the less resource guzzling OS's.
Result: Damn fast

Windows Vista is slower than XP at everything including gaming. But since you've got dual cores and most games aren't multithreaded yet, Vista should have plenty of headroom for all its bullshit background processes. I'm gonna say 98% of the issue is your crappy graphics card. The Geforce 6150 is the budget version of a 3 year old card, it has no business in that rig. You don't need to spend $600 but consider one of these at least.

Shouldn't be a huge issue almost saturating two cores with non-threaded code assuming the OS does a half way decent job of threading their libraries... which Vista does not do... lame OS. I'm not a huge fan of Microsoft, but Vista ranks right up there with ME in my opinion.

You like the one thing they stole from Apple? Heh, funny. (Did you see the video somebody made a while back with a Microsoft soundtrack talking about all the "new innovations" in Vista, but the video had been replaced with somebody demonstrating the "new vista features" on an Apple running OS-X? Very telling...)

You need a better video card.
For around $160, you can get a 7600GT if you look. That's what I'm running, and it does decent on CS:S. If you can spend a little more, go for something a little better.
In Half-Life 2 or CS:S, enable console mode from the Options menu, and bring down console. Type: cl_showps 1<enter>
This will show you how many frames per second you get in the top-right. You want it to be above 50 at all times if possible to keep things running smoothly.
Even with the 7600, though, I still get poor FPS on some maps like de_chateau due to the amount of water.

NVIDIA GeForce 6150 GPU << is this onboard or a card, if it is onboard you are sharing ram and CPU time to manage graphics memory, get a card!

If you are running a computer that is using an onboard card, it reserves part of your ram as video memory via the BIOS. So in short if it is onboard then yes.
