ok speaking of graphic cards i have an asus p4p800 motherboard. I'm not sure what video card slot it runs on. maybe pci.

i believe my motherboard socket is 775 i could be wrong i might need to look that up.

if i wanted a good graphics card, what is the best one i could buy for my motherboard? If i were to get a cheaper one and over clock it how would I go about doing that?

also, apparently I need a certain psu that will support a graphic card up grade? where on my psu do I look to see what type of psu it is?

after we get all that sorted, I'm ready to go and buy right? I'm not planning to play call of duty on this computer, but maybe I can get it to run some better games/movies. it has an hd connector inside, but I don't have an hd monitor anyway.

any good feedback?it runs a 2.4 ghz processor, and has 3.5 gigs memory. the current graphics card is:

nvidia geforce 2 mx/400  32 mb video memory

That board predates the Socket 775 by several years.  Instead, it has a Socket 478.

> what is the best one i could buy for my motherboard?

Donno.  Any card that supports AGP 8x should work fine.  AGP is fairly old technology, so you should be able to find something fairly cheap on the 'dust shelf' at various computer stores.

> apparently I need a certain psu that will support a graphic card up grade?

Unlikely on something this old.  Most AGP graphics cards did not require the extra power of modern video cards.

> where on my psu do I look to see what type of psu it is?

The power provided by the PSU should be on a sticker on the side somewhere.

The ATI 6670 1GB is the one you're after if you can afford it, if not get a HD 5670.

The HD 55XX series of cards are a bad idea in this situation, as is a GT240 or a GT440.

The HD 5670 is cheaper, but the HD 6670 has quite a bit of power, and may be the upper limit of bottlenecking your system.

I personally own a Sapphire HD 5670 1GB DDR5 card, and it rocks. I can play Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, and Oblivion with very high settings at 1024 X 768. For $79 bucks you can't beat this card. I can also overclock it by 16% on both Core/RAM and it's perfectly stable and keeps low temps, and that's like getting 16% more performance for FREE.

I can only imagine how good the HD 6670 is. It's a little more money, but you get a little more power too.

HD 5670 and HD 6670 = Good Price, Good Performance, Good Overclocking, Good Driver Support, Low Power Consumption. Can't really beat that for $80-100 currently.

The Sapphire models come with great cooling solutions, as well.

EDIT:

@Josh1- yeah it's a heap alright, if you like to play games and have 80-100 to spend, read above, neither really need more than the power supply your GT220 uses, and the performance boost will be great.

Sorry dude I didn't see your post. As far as AGP goes, I found this list of stuff, http://goo.gl/It0ZA and the prices aren't too bad, the HIS IceQ HD 4670 may be too expensive of an upgrade, and  the HIS 4650 apparently has fan issues. (Read the Feedback section of it, many issues...)

TigerDirect has that HD 4670 cheaper than newegg, btw...

well, you are right. I already knew that, it's crappy old 478, I think I mentioned in the past somewhere. Sorry I made you look that up.
I think my other dell dimension 4700 has a motherboard with the socket type 775. Strangely enough, I'm pretty sure it'll only support a slightly better cpu, and maybe only a little better ram. Is 775 really that much better of an upgrade?
I'm thinking of scratching getting more video though, I don't need to go crazy with the media, I have vlc player, video driver works fine, codec works fine, I can watch my star trek original series just fine.
I just want to make sure my pc can handle what I'm going to do with it, which I'm going to get to in my next post. Upgrading the video card is probably a retarded idea. I don't think really, with an old motherboard like the one I have, that I could go much over a dual core cpu, and 4 gigs of ram.
anyway, for reference, the psu has a sticker that says: raidmax switching power

            model: rd 350 w (350 w max)

no idea what the psu on my dell dimension 4700 is, I could probably look it up, but there is no need to. I'm going to throw it out one day for something with like an i3 processor, terabyte hard drive, over 4 gigs of ram. Something like that.
I might be able to grab one for under a thousand dollars, or build it myself. When I get the money anyway, I guess when the recession ends?

you know what? that doesn't look that bad actually:

        http://www.guru3d.com/article/ati-radeon-hd-4670-review/
$50? I don't know if I can play crysis but who gives a shit, I can certainly test media with it. Imagine if I had some media beta app that a friend of mine was developing

it'd be nice to have some good graphics processing, if the thing didn't blow up my computer, to try it out on the desktop

hey, talking shit keeps my night going
