Oh and my PSU is some Antec 500w "green" thing.  I don't see the exact model listed on newegg anymore, but it's the newest part of my current build.

I will probably just end up buying the mobo/chip you suggested.  If with that, I can play most old games and some new games and medium settings or less, I'm satisfied.

Where would any extra money be best spent?

Dunno how much money we're talking

Something along the lines of this thing would make gaming leaps and bounds better than an 8800gt without getting too outrageously pricey...

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00C12M9CM/ref=asc_df_B00C12M9CM2579292?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&tag=pg-469-34-20&linkCode=asn&creative=395097&creativeASIN=B00C12M9CM

Would make video game playing leaps and bounds better, your PSU should be able to handle it, but I'd still want a better one... That's the problem with upgrades, it's all cascading.

Really any of these cards for midrange settings and being able to play any game:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107-3.html

If you look at this chart, Tom's Hardware recommends upgrading a GPU if it's 3 tiers higher:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107-7.html

A GTX 650ti Boost would be 7 tiers higher than your 8800gt, so the performance increase would be totally massive.

I second that.. a 650Ti boost would easily be 4x-5x better just in raw performance over a 8800GT.
That card will handle any modern or older games no problem.
Only concern would be if it bottlenecks all the 2GB of VRAM on some games.. but unless you are playing Crysis 3 on 3D surround (or anything in Surround for that matter) you should be fine in almost any game and probably never have to worry about it... might just not want to run at SUPER ULTRA settings in BF3... and use FXAA in the most graphically demanding games for less of a performance hit.
VRAM seems to be getting to be an issue in the newest games, and especially with the new monitors coming out. But 3GB seems to be about the sweet spot right now for any game. Any card I get in the future will have at least 3GB.
Course if you are playing mostly games from 2008, then that card will just eat them all alive.

I wouldn't really trust an Antec Earthwatts with quality hardware. Or I'd at least want a higher quality PSU myself. But that's just because I work tech support and have seen a lot of them go out. "Budget" aka cheap PSUs tend to take other components with them when they die too. However it should be sufficient for that system and a 650ti boost. I probably wouldn't want it long term though.

Since when did Antec power supplies become cheap junk?  They used to be top of the line pro-mode shizzle dizzle.

Nothing is black and white with PSUs dude, nothing. Nada.  Can't trust any brand, can't trust nobody. He said the Earthwatt models.... Antec does sell some good PSUs...  (all this shit is rebranded)  Almost every PSU maker sells some shit models of PSUs and some good ones.  They almost always correspond with price too (not necessarily, still gotta do research on the specific model)... But for a good gaming PSU, you're probably gonna be spending $80-90 at the least IMO.

Yep what CJ said. I didn't say Antec makes all crap PSUs.. just that the Earthwatts in particular are pretty crappy. They are Antec's "budget" low-end PSU and thus they use cheap components and take shortcuts. Antec's higher end stuff is much higher quality. I've seen those Earthwatts fry and take out few motherboards and GPUs with them.. although not nearly as often as OCZ's older PSUs, or ULTRA, or Thermaltake's shitty PSUs, or god forbid.. Diablotek, who can't make a good PSU to save their life.

With PSUs you generally get what you pay for. Some manufacturers are more reputable than others (Seasonic, Corsair, PC Power and Cooling are the best in the PSU business IMO). Antec makes some nice higher end ones, but they also make some crap too, and most of their stuff is rebranded anyway. A lot of the "good" PSU manufacturers use Seasonic OEM anyway for their higher end stuff. I think overall, Seasonic is the most reputable and highest quality PSUs.

I could quickly illustrate it with a handbrake transcode on a 720p 2hr xvid film to mp4 between my quad core i7-2600k, my quad core i7-3820QM macbook pro, and my dual core i5-2557M macbook air.  All three are going to get the same project done, one will do it 30 minutes, one will do it in 50 minutes, and one will do it in 2hrs & 45mins.

Care to take a guess which is which?

I'd say:

quad core i7-2600k in 30 minutes

quad core i7-3820QM macbook pro in 50 minutes

i5-2557M macbook air 2 hours

The power supply for a desktop is more reliable, and I'm guessing you have solid state drives in the macbook pro and desktop and macbook air probably has low watt psu and hdd and less ram?

I'm guessing at that, I didn't look up a lot of specs. Can we see the video?

They all have solid state drives - i7-2600k 2.5" crucial m4 256gb, the 15" retina macbook pro has a 512gb samsung ssd blade, and the macbook air has a 256gb samsung blade as well.  The air is actually the fastest SSD, they moved it off sata and onto pci-e, the read/write speeds are absolutely fucking silly fast.

Well, actually the desktop PSU is more reliable than the macbook pro.  The problem with the external power brick of the macbook pro is that it doesn't actually provide the max capacity of wattage that the machine is capable of running at, so if you really put both cpu and gpu at max load it will slowly eat away at the battery until the machine shuts off after the battery is consumed after a dozen hours..

Well, I am posting from my new PC with all the previously mention components. The one hang-up has been the graphics card.  I haven't been able to get that to work.  I tried downloading the drivers from the NVidia site, but they will not install.

I have been having issues installing a number of other programs, as well has attempting to retrieve my goddamn bookmarks from my previous mozilla firefox profile.

On the bright side, I am blown away by how fast this computer is compared to my previous PC.

You may have tried, but on your old system...

Do it to a usb stick.

then on the new system...

Restore.

It's a .json file extension.

Make sure you do all the updates for Windows 7, you can also install all the latest drivers from the Motherboard manufacturer's website, the ones on disc are often way outdated:

http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/H77M/?cat=Download

Make sure you download the proper drivers (32bit or 64bit depending on which version of windows you installed - the same goes for your NVIDIA card, you have to install the proper drivers for the 8800gt respective to the OS (whether it's 32 bit or 64bit)...

I did in fact use the disc.  I have 64 bit.  Is there a way of checking if I installed the proper and most recent drivers?

if you go to control panel > system > device manager and right click on each device driver and go to properties you should be able to check the driver version

http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/63458

Plop in your card, grab those drivers, and install them.  Do the advanced 'clean install' option.  Write down the exact error message and report back.
