Are there any free Linux distro's that can take advantage of my AMD Athlon™64 X2 Dual-Core Processor 5000+ 2.60GHz? I am currently using Win vista HP.

Anyways, you're just looking for a 64-bit distro.

google ubuntu, prolly the most user friendly distro out there (albeit its still quite a bit more complicated than micro$oft)
if all my games were supported in linux id switch over full time

you can run 64 bit linux on the same comp as windows as long as you have multiple hard drives or partition that can be fully devoted to linux
linux uses a different file system than windows and you cant have more than one OS on a single partition anyway
both linux and windows support multi-boot, so theres no problem

Ubuntu SUSE and actually almost all distros now come with a 64 bit kernel. Check distro watch i recommend ubuntu it's easy to use and install software with.

Yeah, they're out there, it just depends on what kind of feel you want.

You got openSUSE, which is slightly older, but considered to be one of the more user-friendly, you got Ubuntu, which is quite possibly the fastest growing in terms of popularity (i use Mint, which is a derivative of Ubuntu and has a less constrained feel), and if you google, I'm sure you'll find all sorts of distros, most of which support AMD dual cores.

Happy hunting, and welcome to Linux!

In my experience, most 64 bit Linux distros are "pure 64 bit," which is a nice way of saying they don't have good backward compatibility with 32 bit programs. Most users just end up using a 32 bit distro, even though they have modern computers.

Gentoo is the only one I've tried where 64-32 bit cross-compatibility "just works." Gentoo fucking rules.
