Downloading linux - question
    #3411433 - 11/26/04 09:46 AM (12 years, 3 months ago)

I am downloading a version of linux called 'redhat'(don't know if it's good, but thats a different question).

There are 2 sets of 3 ISO images, one is called 'i386' and the other 'SRPMS', which one do I go for?

Thanx to you

i386. SRPMS are the source rpms, they contain actual source code which you probably don't need.

RedHat is ok I guess. I tried it as my first distro and didn't really like it. On the Linuxquestions.com forum it's known as the aol distro if that means anything to you.

Mepis linux looks very promising. It's a debian based distro so it has the ease of apt-get. Also it's preconfigured for most major plugins and has KDE as the default desktop environment.

For a first time install, I'd recommend Mandrake Linux - I've seen packaged distributions for sale for quite cheap (under $50) including lots of manuals, install guides, etc - or you can always download it and view the manuals online. But in regards to your question, cb9fl answered it

http://www.distrowatch.com is your friend when learning about different distributions.

For those who want to buy instead of download, I recommend http://www.linuxcd.org because they just burn the free versions and sell them dirt cheap. They also donate some proceeds to open source projects.

Thanks for your answers.
I'll try mandrake.

I have a spare machine here doing nothing, thought I'd check out linux as everytime I see a windoze question in this forum, everyone is advocating linux

id advise starting with gantoo. binary distros like redhat and mandrake give linux a bad name. their developers put out a bunch of bad out dated binary code, and with those distros you cant get deep down into linux to learn anything without breaking them. get gentoo, and youll know linux well after the install is complete

http://www.gentoo.org
although I do not recommend it to linux newbies, personally...
you can easily become discouraged.

I just started using linux around a month ago ... Started with Fedora Core 2 (based off of redhat) and now I'm on slackware and pretty happy with it

Haven't really given any thought to trying out other distro's lately.

Slackware was pretty nice. I used that for about a year. Slackware in combination with Dropline Gnome allowed fairly easy updating. Although I did have Gnome take a shit on me when Dropline switched from XFree86 to X.org.

With Debian I can update all packages on my system by typing: apt-get update; apt-get upgrade. And the program Synaptic will download packages and take care of all dependencies.

I'm running a LAMP server with postfix and imap using Debian.

A friend is using Gentoo and he loves it. It thoroughly pissed me off after having to wait over 24 hours for a stage 1 install to compile.

Your post makes debian sound pretty good. I had some problems when I went to update slackware 10.0 to current ... but I'm sure any problems were my fault (for being a total noob). I'm looking to set up a dual boot, by adding winXP or win2k. I've been having trouble recording music on linux so I'm going for the dual boot ....

If you have KDE install K3B. It's pretty much a clone of Nero and is so incredibly easy to use.

I don't mean burning CDs. I've had good luck with k3b. I was trying to set up my soundcard's mic input and during the process I lost all sound period ... so I reinstalled slackware.

Which is why I'm taking the easy way out for a while ... because I'm itchin to buy a mixer to put some real mic's to use.

You only need the first two or maybe three CD's. I really would try MEPIS instead. From what I've read it's basically debian with a better installer and more configured.
