Cultivation Forum Quiz
    #4877617 -

Well I just came from a thread I started in Mushroom Cultivation about how I did not think the idea of a forum split was practical, realistic or helpful (this has all been said before I know). After numerous arguments within the forum, I had an idea for a compromise. What I would like is everyone's opinions and suggestions.

Instead of splitting the forums, we instead institute a one-time required quiz for posting. All forums could still be viewed, but a user could not post (at least in cultivation) until they exhibited the minimum required knowledge to do so. I would suggest the quiz be made up of a greater number of total questions with a smaller, random number to be asked. Something like 50 total questions, but 25 of those are randomly selected to avoid cheating or success through trial and error.

I believe this compromise should satisfy everyone that is tired of the repetitive nature of the cultivation posts or of the sometimes obvious apathy new users have towards doing their own research.

Please discuss.

It shouldn't be banished myco.

I am on the opposite side of your opinion completely, however the will is not there for those at the top to split.

So... for that reason this thread is important as it deals some alternatives to a split that might help to solve the problems in mush cult.

I think that solving the problem should be focused on now instead of the split.

To keep this thread, UNLIKE your last thread, constructive...I would suggest that you focus only on the issue of a quiz solution and try to steer things away from chaos if you can.

It's pretty obvious from reading certain posts on this issue from certain people that there will be no split. Therefore it shouldn't even be brought up any further. Just my .02.

I'm just going to copy what I wrote in the other thread, since it's pertinent. And yes, I will try to keep this thread constructive.

I understand this has been gone over numerous times, but can someone tell me why no one wants to actually fix the problem? The fact that so many people ask the same questions does not testify to the retardation of the masses; rather, could it point to a possible failing in the way the Shroomery presents information? The sheer bulk of it makes it problematic for the average grower, so what about the many people who are below average? It is easy to say we don't want them here if that's the case, but what about actually doing something to change it?

If you did split the forum into Beginner and Intermediate sections, and implemented a minimum knowledge requirement to post past Beginner, you would be creating an incentive for those users to learn this information. And since a study guide could be created out of the basic FAQ information the quiz questions would be on, it would be a much more compact and feasible goal for many of those who do not know where to begin.

We really need to change the way we do things, because from the number of complaints about the forum, something obviously isn't working. We just have to decide if it's everyone else, or the Shroomery.

> can someone tell me why no one wants to actually fix the problem?

It's not that we don't want to encourage more organized and informative discussion here, but over the near decade this community has been around, we have tried many things from splash-screens, to heavy-handed moderation, to full post review and approval by a staff member before any post is publicly displayed.. and in most cases, these remain exercises in futility. While requiring a quiz to gain access to a forum could indeed raise the level of thoughtful discussion therein, it would also create an extremely exclusive environment, and limit the amount of new users since many people know that it only takes a few clicks to find another website, but it will take them a long freakin' time to take a quiz of some 50 questions. It is due to this alienation that the administration is hesitant to implement such a tactic.

Since I agree that we do have tons of information here that may not be organized in the best fashion, what we should concentrate on is moving the best information from the BB, into the static information database on the front-end of the website, and furthermore ensuring that it is well organized and fluid for new visitors to the website. While the BB may be the lifeblood of the community that keeps it so dynamic and interesting, the front-end database is where the meat of our information is meant to be held, and where the vast majority of newcomers to the site first seek information. Thus, it should follow that if the information were clearly presented there, new users may not be so confused as to lead them to posting their seemingly redundant questions here on the message board. That my friends, is where I feel the root of this matter lies.

What would be the point? Then you'd have users who had already proved to have a basic understanding of the knowledge in Beginner's Cult, and what exactly would Intermediate Cult then be for? As for the number of complaints about the forum.. there will always be complaints. Look at life, look at how many people protest the government everyday. The fact of the matter is no two beings will see things in the exact same light, even if they stand side by side on the same mountain and view the same landscape, everyone has their own unique opinion, and often enough these opinions conflict with each other. Therefore it should be of little suprise that as time goes on, and this community grows by about 1000 users every month, that there will be more dissention and disagreement, simply as a product of this microcosm of society.

I agree completely that the information archived on the Shroomery needs to be updated and consolidated, as I have made that very point in numerous posts regarding this issue.

This "solution" of mine was in response to what appeared to be a growing number of people saying the forum should be split, which I didn't think was a good idea. With a quiz in place it would solve most of the issues brought up, while I believe benefiting the community as a whole by making it more informed. Also, the number of questions (which is only 25 in my proposal, the 50 total questions are to avoid cheating) is not so great that it would take more than a half hour of reading. Since a study guide could be created for this (basically the consolidation of the information already present on the site, which you seem to be for) it would not be difficult, it would simply prove the user had the absolute minimum knowledge to post in the forums.

Users would still be allowed to browse the cultivation forums, but would have to prove they have at least some basic knowledge of the procedure before they could post. While this may alienate some users, I don't think it would discourage the majority of those who are truly interested in mycology or cultivation. I myself do not see a real problem within the forums now (if you don't like a post I feel you should simply ignore it), but this seems like it would serve a beneficial purpose while compromising with those who feel there are issues that need to be addressed.

I just have a hard time justifying exclusivity for a forum dedicated to our main subject matter. We should welcome anyone and everyone who has the slightest urge to learn about mushrooms, including the dumbfounded novice - and while there are undoubtedly people who will just want to be told what to do and do little research of their own, these people would still post their questions in other forums, or through the support ticket system, or by PM, if they did not have access to the Cultivation forum. Adding a quiz to Basic Cult would automatically require a quiz for Adv. Cult, since new users would probably just post their question there if they could not gain access to the regular cult forum. You might say that the moderators could then move the misdirected questions, but what use is moving someone's question into a forum they cannot access?

I do understand the method behind the madness, but this is not a school where you have to pass any tests or meet some sort of standard, this is an open community for anyone who has an interest in mushrooms and even those who do not. Some may lurk, some may ask redundant questions, some will not receive an answer and some will stick around to give an answer.. adding a quiz to the Cult forum may be a solution for cutting down on redundant topics in that forum, but those same topics will still exist and abound elsewhere to be sure.

Can I just say if I had my way we would leave the forums as they are, without splitting them or implementing a quiz. I do agree with you Geo, I've been making that almost same statement (that the Shroomery is here to provide advice for anyone that desires it, regardless of their level of skill or knowledge).

If I thought that the forums were going to stay as they are I wouldn't have brought this up at all. But the fact that someone else already thought of it, then in three threads no one mentioned that (including moderators), makes me wonder just what is going to happen.
