Happy Halloween, All Hallows Eve, All Souls Day, Samhain!
    #4874492 -

I began a journal on Halloween 1989 because this day has (as the first entry page reads) always had a magickal effect on me since early childhood. Originally, the journal was supposed to be a dream journal, since I was undergoing a Jungian analysis. It rapidly turned into a diary of synchronicities and other experiences of "non-ordinary reality." Every Halloween I drew a Jack-O-Lantern. One year it was weeping and surrounded by a grey aura, another year I show a pumpkin-head in shock from my divorce a few weeks earlier, but I'd like to share a few of my favorite drawings because they reflect the year in retrospect, taken on Halloween. My Wiccan friend Gigi calls my journal a Book of Shadows, and perhaps, after all, it IS a magickal diary (which contains my other drawings that are in the gallery). What do you folks think?

Happy Halloween!

I was going here to start a thread about it, but you've beaten me to it.
That's a remarkable ritual you've got to celebrate this special day. It's personal mysticism from within. Good for you
I'd like to see more but I bet some might have been too personal to stare.

If you look at the European pagan tradition, the Samhain/Halloween festivity historically marked the turning point in the year when the Sun finally dies, and the new year commences. Other lore has it that it is the point when the world of the living and the world of the dead are closest together.

Many pagans consider Halloween to be an alternative New Year's celebration,  the assumed proximity of the spirit world making it an especially fruitful night for ritual focussing mostly on making a new start and making plans for another year, and honoring your deceased loved ones.

Dusk is taking the lands here as I write this and I'll celebrate Samhain in the usual fashion: I'll ritually purify my home using homemade thyme incense (thyme being historically used to both banish evil spirits and embalming the dead. Then I'll hold ritual, nothing fancy, where I will honor my dead and the Natural year that has come to an end and all it stood for, culminating it in the image of the death of the Sun. Afterwards I shall invoke the new year and make plans for the new year.
Halloween is when I cocoon up: for me its the most important night of the year from a pagan point of view.

I will likely chew fresh Salvia leaves during the ritual, it wil be present on my altar, dead center between salt and water, resting on the Pentacle.

Afterwards I will thoroughly ground myself and proceed to watch horror movies. First a spiritual one, Flatliners, then a earthly one, Braindead/DeadAlive.

When I'm certain not to disturb rituals I'll make some witchcalls over the phone ^_^

People: Have a wild party, visit friends, go to the pub or stay at home. Make it an excellent night and to all of you pagans out there:

HAPPY NEW YEAR !!

Aha! Thanks...that explains the presence of some new cycle that I have come to feel on this day. I wish I had people who could share this with me. My Lady who was raised in London til age 7 missed even the childlike aspects and so not having that to build upon doesn't feel much about Halloween. She was raised in Jamaica til she was 14, and tells me of black cloaked top-hatted 'characters' (Duppees, I assume), that she used to routinely see descend from a mango tree, pass in front of her on the veranda, and enter her house. She never felt alarmed by these, and there are other things which even after 9 years, she has yet to share with me, but these things are not connected to any European paganism (she is half Nigerian, half Jamaican :rasta:, and perhaps is connected differently archetypally).

I don't have to begin work til Wednesday (because of the aftermath of Hurricane Wilma), but at best I'll probably light the house up with candles and votives and play Pink Floyd's 'Meddle' - probably play 'Echos' more than once  !

enjoy!
let the dead rest and the living remember
let the living enjoy this peekaboo or hide and seek with the creator both masked and naked face to face
